Our Story and Homes: Where Craft Meets Community

Varnam is more than a brand. It is a journey rooted in heritage, designed to feel like home. Step into our spaces across Bangalore, Mysore, and Goa to experience the story behind every piece.

This isn't a reel to sell, it's a reel to share what it means to create with care. Varnam was never built for the algorithm; it was built for craft, for artisans, and for the stories that deserve to be told.

Varnam means colors, and it reflects my Chettinad roots, a region known for its vibrant mix of cultures. This video shares the story of how my family's creative legacy and my own journey led to the birth of Varnam.

For those who don't know me, I am Karthik Vaidyanathan, the founder of Varnam. This is a bit about my journey, from an engineer-MBA to following my passion for design, rooted in the creative skills passed down by the women in my family.

The seeds of Varnam were sown in my first apartment, which I designed as a tribute to my Chettinad roots. That home, filled with color and craft, became the cornerstone of the Varnam Craft Collective.

My mother's visit to our Jayanagar store sparked memories of her own creative journey, from learning crochet and tailoring to making our clothes. This post is an ode to the incredible women in my family who laid the foundation for Varnam.

Meet Arun, who has been with us since our first tiny basement store. He is not just a team member, he is family. This is the first in our 'Varnam Folk' series, celebrating the people who make Varnam what it is.

Someone told me I have beautiful stores. I smiled and said, "We don't have stores, we have homes." Our Goa home, in a 150-year-old villa, is a space that celebrates craft, heritage, and design.

About this collection

People often ask why I refuse to call these stores. The answer lies in the 150-year-old villa in Sangolda or the quiet corners of Gokulam in Mysore. I built these spaces to be homes. They are places where you can pause, linger, and understand the hands behind our work. When you walk in, there are no sales targets. My team is there to share the story of the makers, not to rush you through a purchase.

When I left my corporate career to start Varnam, my goal was never to chase trends or the algorithm. It was about creating a bridge between my Chettinad roots and the skill of our Channapatna makers. My first home in Cook Town, Bangalore, which I called 'Sweet Abode', was where these seeds were sown. I wanted to bring the warmth of a home, not the clinical feel of a showroom, into every space we created.

Today, whether you walk into our home in Indiranagar, Jayanagar, Mysore, or our 150-year-old Indo-Portuguese villa in Sangolda, Goa, you are not just shopping. You are entering a space meant to be felt. We use sustainable Aale Mara wood and natural, non-toxic dyes, but more than the materials, we celebrate the human connection.

Our spaces are a tribute to the 200-year-old Channapatna craft heritage. When you see our 'Gyaani Goobes' or traditional games, you are looking at work from masters like Hameed Mian or Pallavi, who leads her own workshop. My team, like Arun who has been with us for over a decade, is not here to push products. They are here to share the history of the lacquer-turnery technique and the stories of the people behind every curve. We believe that if you understand the 'why' and the 'who' of a product, you value it differently. That is what we offer: a moment of pause in a fast-paced world.

I started Varnam when I realized design should whisper, not shout. I wanted to create things that carry the soul of my Chettinad roots and the skill of our Channapatna makers. It is my way of keeping a conversation between hand and heritage alive.
