Watercolor Portrait Painting: Capturing Emotion and Life
Every face holds a history. In my live online workshops, we move beyond basic sketches to capture the depth of human expression, the texture of aging skin, and the light in the eyes using watercolor.
The beauty of a smile that has seen a lifetime. This watercolor portrait focuses on capturing pure joy and the character reflected in sunlit wrinkles and expressive eyes.
A collection of faces, each with a unique story. This video shows several of my hyper-realistic watercolor portraits, demonstrating the variety of skin tones, expressions, and cultural details we explore in my advanced classes.
Wisdom in her eyes, stories in her wrinkles. This advanced portrait from my complete watercolor course focuses on capturing a gentle expression through detailed layering and soft color transitions.
A study in color and character. This portrait of a woman in a vibrant red headscarf demonstrates how to balance bold colors with the delicate, weathered textures of the skin.
This portrait is a study in capturing backlight. Notice how the light catches the edges of the hair and defines the form of the face, creating a soft, ethereal glow that we learn to paint in my workshops.
A demonstration on basic portrait painting from my regular course. Here, the focus is on understanding how strong light creates defined shadows, shaping the features and bringing a sense of three-dimensionality to the face.
Painted in 2016, this piece is a tribute to a face full of life. It explores how to use wet and dry watercolor techniques to create the texture of the headscarf and the deep lines of a life well-lived.
A painting that bridges generations. The foreground shows a detailed color portrait, while the background features a monochrome memory of motherhood, demonstrating a powerful storytelling composition.
The gesture of a hand can add so much to a portrait. This painting explores not just the face but also the details of the hand, rings, and the translucent fabric of the veil.
This portrait of a man with a white turban was an exercise in capturing the texture of the beard and the intensity of his gaze. It shows how to balance soft, flowing hair with the sharp details of the face.
About Portraits: Stories in Every Wrinkle
We focus on the anatomy of the face—how to layer watercolors to show the subtle transition of skin tones and the complexity of wrinkles. In these live sessions, you learn to move from a flat sketch to a portrait that breathes, with real-time feedback on your brush control and color choices.
Realism in portraiture is not about perfect lines; it is about understanding the logic of light and shadow. My portrait workshops are designed for those who want to move past simple copies and learn the craft of 'seeing.' We break down facial anatomy—eyes, nose, lips—into manageable, logical steps. We discuss why a specific shade of ochre or burnt sienna works for skin tones and how to create the illusion of translucent fabric or weathered texture through careful layering and glazing. Unlike pre-recorded courses, our sessions on Zoom are fully interactive. We paint together, discuss the philosophy of the subject, and address your specific challenges as they arise. You do not just learn to paint a face; you learn to narrate a story through color, following the tradition of soulful, realistic portraiture. Whether you are working on a piece for a loved one or exploring cultural faces, the goal is the same: to find the life within the paper.

I believe every brushstroke should tell a story. When I teach portraiture, I want you to feel the same connection I do—looking past the surface to find the soul in the eyes and the history in the wrinkles.
