Monochrome and Value Studies: Art Workshops
Before we master color, we must learn to see light. These value studies focus on the essentials: light, shadow, and form, training your eye to bring realism to life.
A monochrome portrait of the legendary Kishore Kumar. Working in a single color helps us focus entirely on value, light, and shadow to capture a timeless charm.
This monochrome portrait was a demonstration from a workshop on value. By removing color, we train our eyes to see the subtle shifts in tone that create realism and form.
Brushstrokes of nostalgia. This monochrome demonstration captures the timeless beauty of Madhubala, focusing on the soft transitions of light and shadow that defined her iconic look.
A value study of the graceful actress Nutan. This monochrome portrait from my complete course teaches students how to capture a gentle and expressive mood.
A video showing the process of painting the Kishore Kumar portrait. Watch how the layers of black watercolor build up to create a realistic and expressive face.
A work-in-progress shot of a monochrome portrait study. This shows the painting on the easel next to my palette, giving a glimpse into the workshop environment.
Another angle of the monochrome portrait in progress, highlighting the light source and the deep shadows.
The Madhubala portrait on my easel, capturing a moody, atmospheric shot of the work in the studio.
A time-lapse video showing the Madhubala portrait from the initial sketch to the final touches, demonstrating the entire process of a value study.
My tribute to the actor Manoj Kumar, known as 'Bharat Kumar'. This monochrome portrait was painted during a workshop to honor his legacy in Indian cinema.
About Monochrome & Value Studies
In my workshops, we strip away the distraction of color to find the soul of a portrait through light and shadow. You won't just be watching pre-recorded tutorials here. We paint live on Zoom, where I can see your strokes and offer feedback on your tonal control in real-time. If you want to build a foundation that makes every future painting better, this is where we start.
Why Value Matters
Most beginners rush to color, but the secret to realism lies in value, the lightness or darkness of a subject. By limiting your palette to a single tone, you train your eye to spot the structure of a face or the curve of a form before adding complexity. This is the bedrock of my teaching.
The Workshop Experience
My classes are small on purpose. I want to see your work on screen while we paint, not just talk at you. We meet on Zoom for live sessions where you can ask questions, show me your paper, and get adjustments on your brush pressure and water control. If you miss a live session, do not worry. You get full access to the recordings to re-watch and practice at your own pace.
What We Cover
- Understanding Tonal Value: Learning to see light and shadow as independent of color.
- Brush Control: Mastering the pressure and pigment load needed for soft transitions.
- Anatomy and Form: Using monochrome studies to grasp facial structure, like the depth in an eye or the contour of a jawline.
- Building Layers: How to wash and glaze to create depth without making your paper muddy.
Whether you are working on a tribute to a legend like Kishore Kumar or learning to render the subtle wrinkles of an elderly face, these techniques give you the discipline to paint with confidence.
