Learn to draw with confidence. Whether you are a total beginner or looking to refine your shading, I guide you through facial proportions and charcoal techniques in a relaxed studio environment.

This is a finished pencil shading portrait where the focus was on capturing the story told by the wrinkles on a face. Learning to draw textures like aged skin is a challenging but rewarding part of my advanced portrait course.

A completed charcoal and pencil portrait of a man in a turban. In this piece, we practiced rendering different textures, from the soft folds of the fabric to the coarse texture of the beard and the deep lines on his face.

This is a finished charcoal portrait of the classic Hollywood icon, Marilyn Monroe. We often study famous faces in my workshops to master capturing recognizable features and glamorous expressions.

A charcoal portrait of a young boy, created on grey-toned paper. Using toned paper allows us to work with both dark charcoal and white highlights, which helps make the portrait pop and gives it a three-dimensional feel.

This charcoal and pencil drawing of a young girl in traditional attire was a study in capturing delicate features and intricate details. We focused on the expressive eyes and the metallic texture of her headpiece.

This video shows the step-by-step process of creating the portrait of the young girl, starting from the initial grid sketch to the final shaded piece. The grid method is a foundational technique I teach to ensure accurate proportions.

Watch the transformation of a blank page into a portrait of Marilyn Monroe. This video shows the layering process in charcoal, from the initial outline and blocking in shadows to refining the details that bring her famous smile to life.

A portrait created using a combination of pencil and charcoal to capture a warm, friendly smile. This piece demonstrates how to blend the two mediums to achieve both soft skin tones and sharp, defined details in the hair and eyes.

A simple and soft pencil sketch of a young child. This is a great example of the foundational sketching we start with, focusing on capturing the gentle contours of the face and the texture of curly hair.

This high-contrast pencil shading of a cricketer was done by my 10-year-old student, Vedavarshini. It's a fantastic example of how we learn to see and draw shapes of light and shadow, not just lines.

About Pencil & Charcoal Portraits

In these sessions, we use the grid method to break down complex facial structures into manageable steps. This ensures you get accurate proportions before we even touch a pencil for shading, making the process approachable regardless of your previous experience.

My goal in these portrait workshops is not perfection, but understanding. I want every student to learn how to 'see' light and shadow, not just copy a reference.

The Curriculum

We typically start with the Foundation Portrait Sketching course, a 10-hour module designed for those who want to build a solid base. We cover the grid method for accuracy, study individual facial features like eyes and lips, and master pencil shading grades from HB to 8B.

For those ready to go further, the Advanced Realistic Portrait Painting course focuses on complex skin tones and layering logic, suitable for those with some sketching experience.

Learning Format

  • In-Person: My studio in HAL 3rd Stage, Indiranagar, provides a quiet, dedicated space for practice. I keep batches small—usually 3 to 5 students—so I can provide hands-on, personal feedback.
  • Virtual: If you are learning from home, I run live interactive sessions. We use a top-down camera setup so you can see every stroke and pressure technique I use in real-time.

What You Need

Art is a craft that requires the right tools. I provide practice sheets and high-resolution reference photos, but I ask students to bring their own professional pencil and charcoal kits based on the list I provide upon booking. This helps you get comfortable with the tools you will actually be using for your future practice.
