Tameshiwari: The Art of Breaking and Mental Focus
This is the physical manifestation of kime—focusing all energy into one single, precise point. Learn how we turn discipline into the power to break through physical and mental barriers.
A demonstration of extreme focus and power. This is a downward fist strike breaking multiple tiles, a technique that requires conditioning, precision, and immense mental control.
This video showcases various Tameshiwari demonstrations from our students and instructors, including powerful kicks, elbow strikes, and hand strikes breaking solid boards.
As the Renshi, I believe in leading by example. Here, I demonstrate a powerful punch breaking a stack of tiles, showing that age is no barrier to strength and discipline.
Three of our female black belt students simultaneously perform a downward elbow strike to break boards. This demonstrates synchronized power and the strength we build in all our students.
A student executes a precise side kick to break two boards held by a partner. This Tameshiwari drill develops accuracy, power, and trust between training partners.
The falling elbow strike is a powerful close-range technique. This student demonstrates the correct form and intensity required to break through multiple boards.
A young female student channels her full power into a downward strike, shattering wooden boards. This is a clear display of her focus and fighting spirit.
About this collection
Tameshiwari is not about force; it is about precision. I teach students to harness kime—the unification of body, mind, and breath—to shatter wooden boards and tiles. This practice develops the control and confidence required to face challenges in life, not just in the dojo.
Many parents and students worry about the physical impact of breaking boards. Here, safety is the first lesson. We do not just smash objects; we build the skeletal strength, correct alignment, and technique required to ensure every strike is calculated and safe. You will see my students—from young boys to our female black belts—perform downward strikes and kicks. This capability is the result of thousands of repetitions of Kihon, our foundational practice.
Why We Practice Breaking
When you see a student break a board, you are not seeing a stunt. You are seeing the result of mental and physical alignment. The process teaches you to:
- Focus: Direct your energy into a single point.
- Control: Master your breathing and stance.
- Conquer Fear: Learn that barriers are often mental, not physical.
Training for Life
The strength built here translates to daily life. Whether you are training in our Shanubhoganahalli or Yelachenahalli dojos, you learn to stand tall when things get tough. We train you to keep that same cool, focused head, whether you are facing a stack of tiles or a difficult situation at work or school.
Join the Dojo
Karate here is a commitment. We follow a structured progression starting with basics, moving through belt grades, and eventually reaching advanced concepts like Tameshiwari. We keep our sessions consistent (3 days a week) to ensure you have the time to practice properly and recover. If you are ready to stop looking at karate as a weekend activity and start building the mindset of a fighter, we are ready to guide you.
Temple of Martial Arts
I started the Temple of Martial Arts in 1990 because karate is a lifelong journey, not a weekend activity. Whether you are a beginner looking to find your balance or a senior student seeking the discipline of a black belt, I train you to become a fighter who stands up when things get tough.
