Moving beyond basic 'sit' and 'stay' commands to uncover the real reasons behind your dog's challenging behavior.

We often expect our dogs to be more emotionally regulated than we are. It's easy to get frustrated, but when we approach their behavior with kindness and patience, we can find solutions rooted in compassion for both them and ourselves.

I've realized that dogs, like people, have different love languages. Some prefer physical touch, while others value quality time or acts of service. Understanding how your dog prefers to give and receive affection can completely change your connection with them.

Every dog is an individual first. Generalizing their personality based on their breed is unfair and often inaccurate. I encourage you to get to know the unique dog in front of you, with all their special quirks and traits.

People often ask me how to control their dog. The truth is, you already control almost every aspect of their life. My goal isn't to give you more control, it's to give you more understanding. That's where the real connection happens.

Our role as caregivers is to understand and modify our own behaviors and expectations to help our dogs regulate their emotions.

Things like the weather, changes in our routine, our own moods, and different sensory stimuli can all influence a dog's behavior on any given day.

Just like us, our dogs can have variations in their behavior on a day to day basis. It's not always about training or disobedience.

We should allow our dogs to have good days and bad days, just like we do. Expecting perfect behavior all the time is unrealistic and unfair.

My New Year's resolutions as a pet parent are all about deepening our connection. This includes focusing on our bond over obedience, accepting my dogs for who they are, and not taking their actions personally.

A little about me. I'm Aishani, a certified dog behavior specialist living in Gurgaon with my three dogs. I left my corporate job in 2018 to follow my passion, and I've never looked back. My work is about helping people and their dogs understand each other better.

About My Approach: Connection Over Control

Most behavioral issues, like resource guarding or leash reactivity, aren't about disobedience; they’re often fear-based. During our sessions, we start by decoding your dog’s body language—like lip licks or head turns—to understand exactly what is triggering their stress before we try to change the reaction.

When you ask for control, you're usually looking at the surface—a dog that sits on command or walks without pulling. But I believe the magic happens when we look at the brain. My approach focuses on behavior modification, which is vastly different from traditional obedience training.

We don't guess what your dog is thinking. We watch for the subtle, early warning signals: a slight yawn, an averted gaze, or a tense posture. These are your dog's way of talking to you long before they ever feel the need to lunge or bark.

Whether we are tackling resource guarding or anxiety, the process is built on empathy. We assess the environment, we look at the root of the trigger, and we prioritize the dog's agency. This means using positive reinforcement, like marker training or reward-based games, rather than correction via punishment.

If your dog is currently aggressive or fearful, our first step is safety. We implement environmental management—like muzzle conditioning or creating physical barriers—so your dog can lower their cortisol levels. Only once they feel safe can we start the real work of changing their emotional response to the world. It’s a journey, not a quick fix, but it builds a foundation of trust that lasts for a lifetime.
