Inside the Studio: Our Creative Process
At our Prabhadevi studio, art isn't about perfect products—it's about the messy, thoughtful journey of getting there. We teach students to think like artists, turning sketches and mistakes into genuine discovery.
A sketchbook is not for perfect, polished work; it's a playground for ideas. This video shows how my students, from toddlers to adults, use their sketchbooks to experiment, play, and explore without fear of making a mistake.
We turn abandoned scribbles into new masterpieces. This "Lost & Found Art" concept shows our philosophy in action: every mark is a starting point, and every piece of paper has a second life.
Exhibition prep is in full swing. This video captures the energy, collaboration, and of course, the paint-covered hands that are a signature of our creative process.
Kids testing their creations in the studio. Whether it's a paper airplane or a decorated cup, the process of making and testing is where the real learning and fun happens.
"They said I was running an art class. No one told me I'd be running a drama school too." A humorous look at the expressive and dramatic personalities that fill our studio with life and laughter.
Art speaks and poetry breathes in our studio. Here, students engage in deep discussions about contemporary artists and use poetry as a springboard for their own drawings, creating a rich, interdisciplinary environment.
"I almost forgot... this was the whole point. To let imagination run wild, and not worry about the end result!" This image captures the essence of our philosophy: finding joy and freedom in the act of creating.
"To create something that makes the world feel more alive." Art is about making a connection and adding your voice to the world. This is the feeling of empowerment I want every student to experience.
"To play, to explore, and to wonder what happens if I just try it!" This is the question that fuels all great art. We encourage curiosity and experimentation above all else.
"To learn from each other, to share stories, and to see the world through different eyes." Our studio is a community where collaboration and shared perspectives are celebrated.
About Inside the Studio: The Creative Process
Our studio operates on the 'Thinking Curriculum,' where sketchbooks are treated as playgrounds rather than rigid canvases. Whether you are 4 or 40, we guide you to document your ideas, experiment with diverse materials—from wire to printmaking—and iterate on your concepts before the final execution. It’s messy, it’s loud, and it’s entirely focused on developing your own visual voice, not just mimicking someone else's technique.
Beyond the Final Product
When you walk into our Prabhadevi space, you won't see a row of students silently copying a photograph. You will see a workspace. We push our students to look at a mistake as an idea that changed its mind. Whether we are utilizing old shoes for sculpture, testing light with stop-motion animation, or deep-diving into printmaking, the goal remains the same: creative thinking.
The Team Behind the Magic
It isn't just me here. My team, including Kuldeep, Satendra, and Lubaina, helps facilitate this environment. We aren't just teaching you how to hold a brush; we are showing you how to observe the world.
- Satendra specializes in the resourcefulness of the studio, turning cardboard and scraps into installations.
- Kuldeep brings a necessary calm to our chaos, teaching students that art can whisper as loudly as it shouts.
- Lubaina manages our toddler and younger sessions with an energy that keeps the room moving.
Why Process Matters
We believe in the power of the 'process journal.' For our teens preparing for top design colleges like NID or Parsons, this is the most critical part of their portfolio. Admissions officers want to see your ideation, your failed attempts, and how you problem-solve. By mirroring real art school intensives in our workshops, we ensure that by the time you apply, you aren't just sending in drawings—you are sending in a clear, well-thought-out body of work that shows exactly how you think.
Purnima Sampat
I started The Art Studio Mumbai because I was tired of art being taught as mere copying. My team and I focus on how you think, not just how you draw, creating a space that feels more like a creative family than a traditional classroom.
