Art Education Beyond the Studio: Gallery Visits and Creative Workshops
Real art isn't just made at an easel. It happens when we step out, observe, and engage with the world. Join us on our gallery tours and creative intensives.
Our students had an incredible session with renowned artist Sudhir Patwardhan at his exhibition. They engaged in conversations, asked questions, and responded to his work through their own drawing and writing.
A photo with artist Sudhir Patwardhan. Meeting the artist behind the work is an invaluable experience that makes art feel immediate and accessible for my students.
Introducing "Art Bites with Purnima," a series where I take you on tours of inspiring galleries. This week, we're at the "AMANO IWATO" show, exploring art based on mythology, man, and nature.
A walkthrough of the "A Show of Hands" exhibition in memory of Gieve Patel. I explained to our students how Patel found profound beauty in ordinary moments, like a peacock wandering into Malabar Hill.
Can light be art? A visit to the "Light into Space" exhibition, where students experienced the work of artists like Dan Flavin and James Turrell, who transform light itself into an artistic material.
Inspired by the "Light into Space" exhibition, we held a neon painting workshop. Participants created vibrant artworks and then watched them magically glow under black light.
A visit to the "Fossils of Force" exhibition by Kulpreet Singh, which reflects on the resilience of farmers. Exposing students to art with social and political themes is crucial for developing critical thinking.
We curated a family-centered corporate workshop for DP World, where children designed lamps and wrote cards for their parents. Our corporate workshops are concept-driven and designed for meaningful engagement.
An alert for a workshop where we dive into city memories. We guide participants to turn their recollections of how their neighborhood has changed into unique art pieces using collage, printing, and painting.
About Learning Beyond the Studio
My students don't just stare at paintings in museums. When we visit exhibitions like the recent Sudhir Patwardhan show or the 'Light into Space' installation, we bring sketchbooks, ask questions, and dissect the artist's process on the spot. It turns observation into action, teaching you to look at a street corner or a light fixture not just as an object, but as a potential composition waiting to be captured.
Art education shouldn't be confined to four walls. When we walk into a gallery, we aren't there to simply admire the work on the walls. We are there to pick it apart. Whether we are discussing the urban chronicles in Sudhir Patwardhan’s paintings or experimenting with neon light after a visit to a contemporary art house, the goal is always the same: to understand the 'why' behind the work.
Our gallery visits are integrated into the curriculum, not treated as an afterthought. We teach students how to engage with exhibitions. If we are looking at Gieve Patel’s work, we talk about why a small news snippet about a peacock becomes a poignant piece of art. We discuss how James Turrell uses light to challenge our perception of space. This builds critical thinking, helping students form their own opinions rather than just accepting what they are told.
For corporate clients and families, we take this philosophy outside as well. We design concept-driven workshops that are built to foster connection. We don't do 'paint-by-numbers' sessions. Instead, we create an environment where teams or families can experiment with materials, reflect on their collective story, and produce something that matters to them. If you want to see art as a dynamic, living practice that connects us to our surroundings, join us.

I’m Purnima. I believe art is a way of thinking, not just a skill you learn in a room. We take our students out to galleries and public spaces because art needs context to truly make sense. Come join our messy, lively, and curious community.
