Candid Moments with the Sitar

Music is more than just a performance. It is a quiet conversation between the player and the instrument. Here is a glimpse into my daily riyaaz and the moments of focus that define my musical journey.

A quiet moment of practice. Finding a peaceful space for your riyaaz is key to making progress.

A smile during a musical moment. The goal is always to find the joy in the music.

"Go where you feel most alive." For me, that place is with my sitar.

A candid shot before a performance. It's important to be focused and present before you play.

Another moment captured before a performance. As the quote says, "When you play, never mind who listens to you."

About Candid Moments

Before the stage lights turn on, there is the daily practice that happens in solitude. Learning the sitar is not just about mastering complex ragas, but about building a relationship with the instrument. In my classes, we start here—with the basics of posture, sound, and patience—to ensure that your foundation is solid from the very first day.

The images you see here are more than just photographs. They capture the reality of my life with the sitar. Whether it is a quiet morning spent with my instrument in Bengaluru or the focus required right before a baithak, these moments define what it means to be a student of music.

My approach to teaching is built on the same principles I learned from my guru Sri Vijay B Gonahalu and dada guru Pandit Arvind Parikh ji. Music is a lifelong pursuit. When we work together, we are not just memorizing scales; we are learning how to listen and how to express.

What You Can Expect

  • Foundational Basics: We will start with how to hold the sitar, understanding the instrument, and developing clean stroking patterns like Da and Ra. Your hands need to feel comfortable before you can play with soul.
  • Raga Exploration: Once you have the basics, we will dive into Hindustani classical ragas. We will look at the structure of Alap, Jod, and Bandish, learning to bring out the specific mood of each raga.
  • Your Own Voice: While we learn the classics, I encourage students to find their own style. Whether that is playing instrumental covers of film songs or improvising, the goal is for you to feel alive when you play.
  • Performance Readiness: For those interested in playing for others, we will work on stage presence and rhythm cycles to prepare you for playing in a small concert or baithak setting.

I travel across Bengaluru to teach, ensuring that the distance does not come between you and your music. Dedication is the only prerequisite. If you are ready to put in the time and the riyaaz, let us begin this journey together.

I am Arjun. I believe the sitar is an extension of who we are, and my journey with the instrument has been shaped by the guidance of my gurus. I teach in Bengaluru, focusing on helping you find your own voice through the strings, whether you are picking it up for the first time or refining your classical technique.
