The monsoon rains transform our forests into a living gallery of fungi. Join me to uncover these delicate, short-lived wonders that hold the forest floor together.

A cluster of tiny, vibrant red mushrooms pushes up through the leaf litter. Finding such a splash of color in the green and brown undergrowth is always a delightful discovery.

Bright yellow mushrooms sprout from a decaying tree stump. These fungi are nature's recyclers, breaking down dead organic matter and returning nutrients to the soil.

The beautiful, intricate patterns of bracket fungi growing on a wet log. Their curious convolutions and rich, deep red colors make them a fantastic subject for macro photography.

A dense colony of delicate, pale mushrooms covers a patch of the forest floor. The sheer variety of fungi is astonishing, and each walk reveals something new and beautiful.

About Monsoon's Ephemeral Kingdom: Fungi

To capture these fungi, you don't need expensive telephoto gear. During our sessions in the moist pockets of Sanjay Gandhi National Park, I focus on helping you read the forest floor to spot these tiny wonders and choosing the right perspective to tell their story, whether you are using a smartphone or a professional DSLR.

Fungi are the unsung heroes of the monsoon. As humidity rises, the forest floor erupts with mushrooms that decompose debris and fuel the cycle of life. My walks are not about checklists or racing for the perfect shot. Instead, we spend four hours slowing down to truly see the forest.

We look for the intricate shapes of bracket fungi, the vibrant colors of mushrooms pushing through the leaf litter, and the smaller organisms that define this season. You will learn to stabilize your camera against damp earth, find the best angles for macro composition, and identify the species that appear only during these few fleeting weeks. We talk about the importance of ethical fieldcraft, ensuring we capture images without disturbing the delicate micro-habitats where these fungi thrive. These walks are about building a connection with the wilderness, helping you notice the small-scale drama that most people walk right past.

I have spent years wandering the trails of Sanjay Gandhi National Park, often with my camera bag and a naturalist's curiosity. For me, fungi are not just specimens, but the silent, masterful recyclers of our woods, and I love showing people how to find them in the green quiet of the forest.
