Behind the Decks: My VDJ and Audio Setup
A look at what happens at the console—where I read the room, sync the beats, and keep the energy moving from the first track to the last.
A daytime rooftop gig with the city skyline as my backdrop. I'm focused on the mix, using my Pioneer DJ setup to craft the perfect sound.
Music is the strongest form of magic. This is a shot of me at my console during a sunny afternoon set, ready to create some magical moments.
A candid moment behind the decks. Holding my headphones, listening for the perfect moment to transition to the next track.
In the zone, concentrating on the turntables. You can see my VDJ screen in the background, which is an integral part of my performance.
About Behind the Decks
I don't just hit play. When I'm behind the console, my eyes are constantly on the dance floor to see which tracks are landing and when it is time to shift the BPM. Whether it is a high-energy corporate mixer or a sunset lounge vibe, I am adjusting my EQ and transition timing in real-time to match the pulse of the room, ensuring there are no awkward silences between songs.
The VDJ Advantage
Mixing audio is only half the work. For my VDJ sets, I use a Pioneer CDJ 2000NXS2 setup to sync original music videos with the beat. Whether it is a retro Bollywood throwback from the 90s or the latest chartbuster, having visuals on the LED screens changes the energy entirely. It turns a standard party into a full audio-visual experience where the crowd isn't just listening—they're watching.
Reading the Room
Every event has a different flow. A corporate gig needs a mix that keeps people talking, while a Sangeet night needs high-energy transitions to get everyone to the dance floor. My process starts by watching the first few minutes of the crowd's reaction. If I see people vibing to Afro House, I pivot there. If they want classic 80s hits, I go deep into my retro library.
Technical Reliability
I carry my own MacBook Pro with Rekordbox and Serato, but I always coordinate with the venue's tech team to ensure the audio-visual sync is tight. For my VDJ sets, I manage the HDMI splitters and video interface cabling myself, so you do not have to worry about the tech side of things. My goal is to make sure the music keeps flowing, no matter the venue.
