Custom Pet Portraits in Pencil
I turn your favorite photos of your pets into detailed, realistic pencil drawings that capture their unique personality and that special spark in their eyes.
This video shows the process of creating a commissioned portrait of a woman with her beloved dog. I take care to draw both the human and pet with equal detail, capturing the special bond they share.
About Pet Portraits
Drawing animals requires a different approach than human portraits, mainly because of the fur texture and the expressive nature of their eyes. I use a combination of graphite for the underlying structure and charcoal powder for the depth in the coat, ensuring the drawing feels soft and alive rather than just a flat outline.
My Approach to Pet Portraits
When I work on a pet portrait, I focus on the details that define your companion. Whether it's the specific pattern of a cat's fur, the deep, soulful look in a dog's eyes, or the texture of their snout, I want the sketch to feel like they are right there with you.
I use high-grade 250 GSM paper, which handles the heavy layering and blending required for realistic fur textures without warping. For the darkest areas—like a black coat or deep shadows—I rely on charcoal, as it offers a matte, rich black that graphite alone can't achieve.
How to Get Started
To get the best result, please share a high-resolution photo. It helps if the photo is taken in natural light, as it allows me to see the true color and texture of the fur.
- Timeline: A typical commission takes 7 to 10 days, depending on complexity and size.
- Packaging: Your artwork is treated with a fixative spray to prevent smudging and shipped flat between rigid boards to ensure it reaches you in perfect condition.
- Process: I often share updates during the process so you can see how the sketch is coming along.
If you have multiple pets or want to include them with family members, I can combine photos to create a cohesive scene. Just let me know what you have in mind and we can figure out the best size and format for your space.
