Hyper-Realistic Celebrity & Fan Art Portraits
I specialize in capturing the essence of public figures through hyper-realistic pencil work. Here is a look at my process for layering, shading, and detailing that brings these faces to life on paper.
This video shows the process of sketching the late Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam. From the first lines to the final shading and highlighting, each step is a tribute to his inspiring presence.
A time-lapse of my portrait sketch of actress Keerthy Suresh. This video shows how I build up the drawing, focusing on creating realistic hair texture, soft skin tones, and her bright, smiling expression.
A work-in-progress shot of my Robert Downey Jr. portrait. Here, I have focused on rendering the hair with incredible detail, showing how I use a sharp pencil and the grid method to ensure accuracy and realism.
Another progress shot of the Robert Downey Jr. sketch. At this stage, I've started blocking in the dark values around the eyes, establishing the deep-set look that is crucial for capturing his likeness.
This process video shows different stages of drawing actress Krithi Shetty. You can see close-ups of me working on her hair, eyes, and facial contours, using various tools to achieve a photorealistic effect.
A quick look at the process behind my sketch of actor Shahid Kapoor. It starts with the sharp point of the pencil and quickly reveals the finished, highly realistic portrait.

Another view of the finished Shahid Kapoor sketch. This piece demonstrates how to use light and shadow to create a three-dimensional effect, making the portrait pop off the page.
Here is a side-by-side comparison of my sketch and the original reference photo of Shahid Kapoor. This shows how closely I work to capture every detail and the essence of the subject.

About Celebrity & Fan Art
Achieving that hyper-realistic look is not just about the shading; it is about the tools and the patience. For these celebrity portraits, I focus heavily on hair texture using Mono Zero erasers to lift highlights and 10B graphite for deep, dramatic shadows. If you are looking to get a portrait of your favorite icon or a loved one, that same attention to texture—whether it is the sheen of a saree or the stray hairs on a beard—is exactly what I bring to every commission.
Every sketch you see here starts the same way: with a blank sheet of 250 GSM Brustro or Fabriano paper and a high-resolution reference photo. I use the grid method to ensure 100% facial proportion accuracy before I even pick up a graphite pencil.
My Process
Once the outline is set, I spend hours layering. I use HB for light initial structures and move up to 10B for the intense blacks that make a portrait pop. Charcoal is my go-to for fabric textures and deep hair contrast, while specific tools like Mono Zero erasers allow me to pull out those tiny, critical details—like the shine in an eye or the subtle wrinkles of a smile.
Why I Focus on Realism
People often ask if my sketches are black-and-white photos. That is the goal. Whether I am drawing an actor for a fan tribute or a family member for a special occasion, I treat the work as a study in human expression. This is why I use these pieces as teaching examples in my online workshops—to show students that realism is built layer by layer.
Planning Your Commission
If you have a photo you want transformed into a custom graphite or charcoal portrait, the process is straightforward:
- Send the photo: High resolution works best for catching the details you care about.
- The Sketching: I typically work on A4, A3, or A2 sizes, depending on how many faces are involved. A4 is perfect for single portraits, while A2 works best for groups.
- Shipping: Once finalized and sealed with a matte fixative to prevent smudging, I flat-pack your art between rigid boards to ensure it arrives at your doorstep in perfect condition.
If you want to learn how to achieve these textures yourself, I am always happy to discuss my upcoming batch of live art classes.
