Studio Fashion Photography: Mastering Light and Drama

The studio is my laboratory. Here, I use everything from single-source setups with a fresnel lens to complex multi-light arrangements to sculpt mood, drama, and form.

A quick look at a one-light setup using a fresnel lens. This modifier creates a focused, hard light that’s perfect for dramatic, high-contrast fashion portraits. You can see how it sculpts the model's form and creates that cinematic, moody feel.

This shot is all about the light. Using a single, hard light source from the side, we created a "raw reverie" effect. The light catches the sheer fabric and highlights the model's form, creating a powerful and elegant silhouette against the dark background.

For this "Untamed" series, we used a strong rim light to separate the model from the vibrant blue background. The light traces her silhouette, emphasizing the power in her pose and the texture of the animal-print dress.

Using a mirror to create reflections and a sense of duality. The lighting is minimal and from the side, creating a silhouette effect that is broken only by the model's intense expression. This is a simple but powerful way to create a conceptual image.

A cover shot for Artego Magazine. The lighting here is soft but directional, wrapping around the model to create a three-dimensional feel. The reflection in the mirror adds depth and a sense of introspection.

This shot uses a combination of colored gels and a hard rim light to create a dynamic, high-energy feel. The light from behind separates the model from the blue backdrop, while a magenta gel adds a pop of color to her skin.

This shot combines studio lighting with a bit of digital magic. The main light is a hard source to freeze the action, while the fish was generated with AI. It’s an example of how I blend technical photography with creative post-production to tell a surreal story.

From my "Chiaroscuro Dreams" series. This is a classic example of using light and shadow to create drama. The setup uses a key light to illuminate the subject while letting the background fall into deep shadow, creating a moody, almost painterly effect.

About Mastering Light: In The Studio

In the studio, I don't just take pictures. I build them light by light. Whether I am using an optical snoot to cut sharp, defined shadows or a fresnel lens to add depth, every source is placed to sculpt your features. You will notice the difference between a flat digital file and a shot that feels three-dimensional, like it belongs in a high-end magazine.

Photography is about control. When we are on set in my Mumbai studio, we aren't chasing the sun. We are creating the atmosphere. My workflow relies on high-end Profoto gear and tethered shooting, which means you see the results on the monitor in real-time. This allows us to adjust the light, tweak the posing, and perfect the mood before the shutter even clicks.

My studio sessions are a team effort. You are not just getting a photographer. You are getting a full creative team including a stylist and HMUA who understand the vision. We focus on storytelling that works for magazines, agencies, and brand lookbooks.

I treat post-production with the same intensity as the shoot. From frequency separation to local dodge and burn techniques, I handle the retouching personally. This is why I do not hand over RAW files. A RAW file is an incomplete thought. I deliver finished, high-resolution assets that are ready for print or digital campaigns. If you want a portfolio that stands out, we have to respect the process. Aisa kuch kar sakte hain apan (We can do something like this).

I'm Shreyans. In the studio, I’m the director of the frame, moving lights until the shadow hits exactly where it needs to. If you want a portfolio that looks like a high-end magazine feature, we should talk.
