Exploring Different Calligraphy Tools and Techniques
From brush pens to classic dip pens, see how we use different tools to create beautiful script. Join me to explore which instrument fits your personal style best.
To master any script, you must first master the basic strokes. This video is a mini-lesson on the foundational movements like the overturn, underturn, and compound curve that form the basis of beautiful handwriting and calligraphy.
Have you ever tried a glass pen? It's a beautiful and unique tool for lettering. Here I am using a glass dip pen with yellow ink to write the word "Magical." The way the ink flows is truly special.
"Trust yourself." For this bookmark, I used a brush pen with red ink to create a simple, elegant script. This shows that you can create beautiful things with even the most basic calligraphy tools.
I love to mix media. Here, I am swatching different levels of watercolor paint before using them to create a colorful background for a brush calligraphy piece. This is a great way to add personality to your art.
This artwork shows a mix of techniques, including color blending in the word "Smile" and simple floral doodles. The tools shown are some of my favorites for creating vibrant and cheerful brush calligraphy art.
About Exploring Different Tools & Techniques
You don't need an expensive kit to start your journey. We will look at how a simple brush pen differs from a traditional dip pen, and why choosing the right tool is the first step in finding your rhythm. It is not just about the pen—it is about your grip and the pressure you apply to the paper.
Whether you are picking up a pen for the first time or looking to refine your script, the tool you choose changes everything. In my classes, we demystify the hardware so you can focus on the art.
The Tools I Teach
- Modern Brush Pens: These are my go-to for beginners. They are flexible, forgiving, and perfect for learning pressure-sensitive strokes. I teach how to blend colors directly on the page to make your notes pop.
- Traditional Dip Pens: For those aiming for the elegant look of Copperplate, we use dip pens. This requires a different kind of patience. We focus on ink management and the 55-degree slant, teaching you how to control ink flow without blotting.
- Glass Pens: A unique experience. These pens use capillary action to draw ink. They are beautiful to look at and surprisingly smooth for detailed lettering.
Why Technique Matters
Learning the tool is only half the battle. I break down the mechanics of every stroke—the overturns, underturns, and compound curves. This structural approach ensures that no matter what pen you are holding, your letter formation remains consistent. We spend time on ergonomics and grip posture, ensuring you can write for hours without hand fatigue.
My workshops are designed to be practical. If you join me in my Mumbai studio, you will get hands-on time with these tools to see what feels natural in your hand. If we are working online, I will guide you on how to set up your practice space to get the same results. Sirf trust karna hai—the process works.
