I believe the kitchen is the heart of any home. It is where functionality must meet aesthetics, from smart appliance garages to hidden storage that gives every ingredient its own designated space.

What happens when the client is your wife, and she's a chef? You get a kitchen that's the perfect blend of professional function and homely warmth. Here, we discuss the design brief for our own kitchen, focusing on space, natural light, and a place for everything.

In this video, I ask my chef wife, Parvana, what her two favorite things are about the kitchen we designed together. She highlights the appliance garage that keeps everything tidy and the immense counter space made possible by our smart storage solutions.

This sleek, modular kitchen is designed for ultimate functionality. The parallel counters provide ample workspace, while the subtle two-tone cabinets and integrated appliances create a clean, modern aesthetic.

Good lighting is essential in a kitchen. In this video, I share some tips on how we use layered lighting, including ambient, task, and decorative lights, to create a kitchen that is both practical for cooking and warm for gathering.

A classic and practical modular kitchen from our Bellevue Apartment project. The glossy brown and white cabinets provide a sleek look, while the U-shaped layout maximizes counter and storage space.

This bifold shutter is a stylish and practical solution we created between the kitchen and dining area. It allows for an open, connected feel when desired, and can be closed to create a beautiful backdrop and provide privacy.

About this collection

The secret to a truly functional kitchen isn't just pretty tiles; it is how you manage the clutter. I always incorporate 'appliance garages' into my layouts to keep heavy items like mixers and air fryers plugged in but completely out of sight. It instantly transforms a chaotic countertop into a clean, prep-ready zone that stays clear even when you are cooking a full meal.

Designing a kitchen that works as hard as a professional chef's station while maintaining the warmth of a family home is a challenge I genuinely enjoy. In Mumbai, where every square foot is premium, we cannot afford to waste space on designs that look good but don't function.

My approach focuses on three core pillars:

  1. Smart Hardware & Layouts: I insist on BWP (Boiling Water Proof) Marine Grade plywood for all carcasses to handle Mumbai's moisture. We use premium soft-closing Hettich or Blum mechanisms so drawers don't slam, and we design for specific workflows—parallel, U-shaped, or island—depending on your habits.

  2. Layered Lighting: This is where most kitchens fail. You need ambient light for general cleaning, bright task lighting over your counter for chopping, and warm decorative lighting (ideally 3000K to 3500K) to make the space feel inviting at night. It is not just about visibility; it is about the mood.

  3. Flexibility: If your kitchen opens into the living or dining area, we often use bifold shutters. These allow you to close off the kitchen when you have guests or need privacy, and open it up when you want that connected, spacious feel.

Whether we are building a sleek, modern unit or a more traditional space with English-style wall mouldings, the goal remains the same: a kitchen that makes your daily life easier, not more complicated.

I’m Shahen Mistry. Designing kitchens is where I get most obsessive—balancing the professional rigour of a chef’s workspace with the warmth of a family home. I don't build showroom-perfect spaces that can't be used; I build kitchens that are made to be lived in.
