Yash, a 5th standard student, captured the spirit of the Ganesh festival in this oil pastel drawing. The scene shows a public pandal on the roadside, full of life and celebration.

About Traditional Indian Art

At Saptarang, we do not just teach kids to copy traditional patterns. We focus on the storytelling behind every motif, like the traditional fish, lotus, or village scenes in Madhubani art. This ensures students understand the cultural meaning of what they are painting while they develop the fine motor skills and patience required for intricate detailing on canvas.

Traditional art is where culture meets creativity in our studio. While many art classes focus solely on sketching, we dedicate time to helping students explore the roots of Indian folk art. We start with the basics—simple lines, geometric shapes, and the iconic border patterns that make Bihar’s Madhubani style so instantly recognisable.

As students progress, they transition from paper to acrylics on canvas. For our senior students, this practice is an exercise in focus. We use traditional colour palettes, focusing on the bold, vibrant tones that bring these historical art forms to life. Whether a child is working on a Ganesha portrait for a festival or a detailed folk scene, we guide them to balance traditional aesthetics with modern painting techniques.

Our approach is methodical. We teach students how to manage their brushes for those fine, consistent lines and how to layer colours to create depth. It is not about perfect execution on day one, but about building a connection to these timeless art forms while gaining the technical confidence to handle different mediums.
