Landscapes and Golden Light Photography by Santosh
I chase the wild, quiet beauty of India from dawn to dusk. Every image here is a real moment captured during the fleeting magic of golden hour.
A classic sunset view in Kochi, Kerala, featuring the iconic Chinese fishing net silhouetted against a fiery orange sky. This image captures a unique cultural landscape at the most beautiful time of day.
A wider view of the Kochi sunset, with a palm tree framing the scene. The warm, golden light reflects beautifully on the water, creating a peaceful and tropical atmosphere.
The setting sun seen through the silhouette of tree branches in Kochi. This composition uses natural elements to frame the golden orb of the sun as it dips towards the horizon.
The last light of sunset hits a single mountain peak in Ranikhet, making it glow red against the darkening range. This is a dramatic and fleeting moment captured in the Himalayas.
A vibrant red and purple sunset over the hills of Ranikhet. The sun is just a sliver on the horizon, casting a deep, warm glow over the entire landscape.
A moody and atmospheric shot of a lush green valley under heavy, dramatic clouds. This image, taken on an iPhone, shows the powerful and somber beauty of the mountains during a storm.
The sun sets behind the hills along a river in Jim Corbett. The gentle light creates a calm and serene mood, reflecting softly on the flowing water.
Golden sunlight from the setting sun creates a glittering path across the river's surface. This shot is all about the beautiful interplay of light and water.
A bright, sunny day on the river in Jim Corbett, with the water churning in the foreground. This image captures the energy of the river and the vastness of the surrounding landscape.
A tranquil sunrise over the river, with the sun just peeking over the hills. The cool, early morning light gives the scene a peaceful and quiet feeling.
About Landscapes & Golden Light
I do not use studio lights or artificial setups for these landscapes. Every shot here depends on waiting for that specific, fleeting golden hour, whether it is the mist clearing in Ranikhet or the sun hitting the water in Kochi, to get the frame right in-camera. It is a slow process, often requiring patience while the light changes, but it is the only way to capture the natural, warm mood I look for in my work.
My Approach to Light
Photography is not just about the gear, though I rely on my Canon 80D and sometimes my iPhone to catch what the eye sees. It is about fieldcraft. Whether I am shooting a riverbank in Jim Corbett or the mountains of Spiti, my priority is the atmosphere.
I focus on:
- Natural Light: I avoid artificial lighting entirely. I plan my shoots around sunrise and sunset to get those deep, rich colours without needing heavy post-processing.
- Composition: I look for silhouettes, reflections on water, and frames within nature—like a tree branch framing a sunset over Kochi—to add depth to the scene.
- Patience: Nature does not move on a schedule. I spend hours on location, waiting for the weather to turn or the light to hit the mountain peaks just right.
Where I Shoot
My base is in Gurugram, but my work takes me across India. I document places like the biodiversity parks of NCR for local photo walks, and travel to destinations like the Himalayan belts or National Parks when clients need outstation expedition coverage. If you are looking to learn this approach, I offer field mentorship sessions where we can walk through these techniques on your own gear, focusing on manual mode, bird spotting, and framing your shots correctly in the wild.
Santosh Roy
I am Santosh. My studio is wherever the sun hits the earth just right. I spend my time chasing that perfect light from the cold valleys of Spiti to the quiet waters of Kerala, and I am always happy to teach others how to find it, too.
