Traditional Goju-Ryu Karate Training in Mumbai
Welcome to our dojo. We treat karate as a way of life, training everyone from young children to seniors in the traditional Goju-Ryu style. See how our community practices discipline and respect on the mat.
A glimpse into the precision and power of Shiai Kumite. Here, one of our senseis executes a lightning-fast Mawashi Geri (roundhouse kick) to score an Ippon, a clean point, demonstrating the speed and timing we cultivate in our training.
The culmination of years of hard work. We are proud to present our newest Shodans (black belts) alongside their Sensei, a moment of immense pride and a key milestone in their Karate-do journey.
Sanchin, one of the core katas of Goju-Ryu, practiced in unison outdoors. This form is a moving meditation that builds strength, focus, and the connection between mind, body, and technique.
It's never too early to start. Here, one of our youngest students, at just four years old, confidently demonstrates her basic punches: Jodan (upper), Chudan (middle), and Gedan (lower) Tsuki, building a strong foundation with focus and spirit.
"Karate begins and ends with respect." This is the core of our dojo's philosophy. We bow to honor our training space, our teachers, our partners, and the lineage of masters who came before us.
Every belt tells a story. Listen to Sempai Diyaan share his personal journey from an eight-year-old boy to a confident Shodan, explaining how karate taught him discipline and how to be there for others.
Our training prepares students for the world stage. We are incredibly proud of Shandai Manan Parekh for securing a gold medal at the 9th Asian Goju-Ryu Tournament in Colombo, representing our academy and our country with honor.
We honor traditional Okinawan training methods. Here, our senior students are using the Chishi, a weighted tool designed to develop wrist, grip, and forearm strength, essential for powerful blocks and strikes in Goju-Ryu.
Our training camps are about more than just karate. They are a time for building friendships, sharing laughter, and strengthening our community bonds, proving that we are truly a karate family.
"Maa baap se bhi uncha..." In India, the teacher holds a place of great honor. This video is a tribute to our founder, Kyoshi Sensei Rajesh Thakkar, who embodies the spirit of a true guru, guiding generations of students.
About Featured
In Goju-Ryu, we focus on the balance between 'Go' (hard) and 'Ju' (soft). You will see this in our practice of Sanchin and our basic drills. It is not just about force; it is about finding the right energy for every movement. When you step onto our mat, you are not just a student; you are part of a lineage that has been training in Mumbai since 1980.
Our training follows traditional Okinawan methods. We start with basics (Kihon) to build your foundation, then move to Kata—which is the silent story in motion—and Bunkai for practical application. Whether you are aiming for your first belt or a Kuro-Obi (black belt), the journey is personal and follows your own pace.
What makes us different is the atmosphere. We are a family. We hold regular camps and tournaments, but the real work happens during our weekly sessions in Byculla, Nariman Point, and Marine Lines. I personally oversee the progress of every student, ensuring that the discipline we practice inside the dojo translates to strength in your daily life. If you are serious about learning a martial art that stays with you long after you leave the mat, we have a place for you.
