My Design Philosophy: How I Create Soulful Spaces
Design is about more than just furniture and finishes. It is about energy, light, and creating a space that actually feels like you.
Lighting is the heart of any space. As I explain in this video, it has the power to instantly change the mood, from a bright, productive white light to a warm, relaxing yellow light. The right lighting can enhance colors and make a room feel truly alive.
How do I choose the right color for a room? It’s a process that involves looking at the volume of the space, the direction of sunlight, and most importantly, the personality of the person who will live in it. It's about creating a color story that feels personal.
I have a little secret for selecting a color palette. I often try to sense a client's aura and the colors they are drawn to. I usually start with a base of neutral colors and then add a pop of a vibrant shade to bring character and a gush of energy to the space.
In this video, I share some common design mistakes you should avoid. My advice is to be yourself, mix matte and glossy textures, and don't be afraid to mismatch. Authenticity is always more impactful than following trends blindly.
Staying updated with design trends is part of my job, but I believe in adapting them to tell a personal story. This video highlights some of the top interior design trends, like biophilic design, sustainable materials, and multifunctional spaces.
This video explores some of my favorite color combinations that can elevate your interiors. From calming duos like blue and grey to energetic pairings like green and black, the right palette can completely transform the feel of your home.
About My Design Philosophy & Tips
When I start a project, I do not just look at floor plans. I look for the natural light flow and how you move through the room. If a space feels off, it is often because the lighting is fighting against the room’s volume. I always start by fixing the lighting circuits—layering warm, dimmable lights—before I even think about paint swatches or furniture. Lighting is the heart of a room, and getting it wrong is the fastest way to kill the mood.
Beyond the Aesthetics
I have spent over 20 years in this industry, and if there is one thing I have learned, it is that a home should not look like a magazine page. It should feel like a story. My design philosophy is simple: keep it real, keep it practical, and never ignore the energy of a space.
The Lighting & Color Connection
Lighting and color are the two biggest levers we have to change how a home feels. A white light puts you in work mode, while warm, yellow light creates a place to rest. I always tell my clients to look at the direction of the sunlight before picking a color palette. I like to start with neutral, grounded tones and add a pop of something vibrant to bring the space to life. If you feel calm in a room, it is usually because the colors are working with you, not against you.
Common Mistakes I See
I see a lot of people falling into traps. Here is what I tell my clients to avoid:
- Too much gold: Your home is not a wedding set. Keep it minimal.
- Artificial flowers: Use real plants. They breathe life into a room.
- Matching everything: Don't be afraid to mismatch textures and materials. It adds character.
- Over-reliance on trends: Brands will tell you what is popular, but authenticity is always more impactful.
Why the Process Matters
My worksites are not pretty. They are noisy, dusty, and full of hustle. That is how real transformation happens. I am very strict about finishing—if something is slightly off, I will ask for it to be removed. I believe that when you trust the process and give me a free hand, that is when the most beautiful results happen.
