Cook & Keep: A Recipe Journal for Kids

byNivaalaShips across IndiaView full gallery

Children see magic in the kitchen where we see routine. This journal gives them a space to document their own food memories, from messy dough-covered hands to the stories behind Nani's secret recipes.

Children ask the questions adults are too proud to ask. They are curious enough to capture the real secrets of the kitchen. This journal is for them.

An illustration showing why every child should document a recipe before they grow up and forget how to ask. Our 'Cook & Keep' journal gives them the perfect space to do just that.

To you, it's just Tuesday dinner. To them, it's alchemy. Children see magic where we see routine, and their documentation captures a wonder we've forgotten exists.

They remember what we take for granted: the way Grandma hums while chopping, the face you make when a dish is perfect. Adults document ingredients. Children document love.

They're not afraid to get it wrong. Their drawings are messy, their spelling is creative, but they're capturing something real: the joy of learning and the permission to experiment.

That crayon-scrawled recipe card will one day matter more than any professional cookbook. With this journal, they create tomorrow's heirlooms today.

A look inside the 'Cook & Keep' journal. Simple, meaningful questions like "Who makes this dish in your family?" help children connect a recipe to the people and stories behind it.

About this collection

It isn't just about getting kids to write down a recipe, it's about giving them permission to experiment, get messy, and ask the questions we often forget to ask. With playful prompts and stickers, this journal turns their kitchen adventures into a tangible piece of your family history that you will cherish long after the flour is swept away.

Why We Created Cook & Keep

I realized that children are the best archivists because they aren't afraid to ask the questions we've become too proud to voice. While we focus on the perfect ratio of flour to water, they are capturing the andaaze se (by estimation) magic and the laughter that actually makes a dish taste like home.

What's Inside the Journal

We designed this kit to be durable enough for a four-year-old's enthusiasm and engaging enough for a ten-year-old's curiosity.

  • Playful Prompts: Instead of dry ingredient lists, we use questions that spark stories: "Who makes this dish in our family?" or "When do we usually eat this?"
  • Sticker Sheets: Included is a sheet of themed food stickers—think ladoos, pressure cookers, and spice boxes—to help them decorate their pages.
  • Educational Intros: We’ve included simple, fun breakdowns of Indian spices and basic cooking milestones like 'My First Roti', turning learning into a game.
  • Hardbound Build: We know that kitchen tables can be messy places. The paper is high-opacity and the cover is tough, made to withstand crayons, sketch pens, and the occasional spilled drop of ghee.

Building a Legacy

This isn't just a book to be filled and put on a shelf. It is a shared activity. When your child sits at the kitchen table to write down a recipe, they are learning that their food heritage is something valuable. Whether it is a sourdough bread recipe or a simple besan ladoo, these pages ensure that the story behind the meal isn't lost. You are giving them the tools to become the next generation of keepers for your family recipes.

I started Nivaala after losing my mother’s recipes, and it is a pain I don't want any family to face. This kids' journal is my attempt to help the next generation start their own legacy early, so they don’t just eat the food, they own the stories.
