Collaborative Food Anthologies & Heritage Projects
Food is more than ingredients, it is a living history of our families. Through our partnerships, we bring together voices from kitchens across India to document the recipes and moments that define us.
An illustration from 'Memories on a Plate', our collaborative book with The Alipore Post. It shows how food memories, like a father's love language of half-boiled eggs, are woven into our lives.
"This banana blossom recipe is our family heirloom..." A quote from Imdad Barbhuyan in 'Memories on a Plate', showing how a single dish can soothe a homesick heart.
A close-up of an illustrated recipe from 'Memories on a Plate'. We wanted to capture the beauty and detail of handwritten recipes in this special anthology.
"Papa, the 'food wizard' of our family..." A quote from Shubhshree Mathur in our book, telling the story of how her father prepared her palate for new tastes.
A hand holding our book 'Memories on a Plate', open to a vibrant illustration. This project transforms personal food remembrances into a beautiful culinary anthology.
"Every recipe of my Amuma is imbued with this energy—How to make this dish the quickest way..." A quote from Oorja Makkad in our book, capturing the practical magic of a grandmother's cooking.
"No one who cooks, cooks alone." This quote by Laurie Colwin perfectly captures the spirit of 'Memories on a Plate', a book that surrounds you with generations of cooks.
About this collection
When we work on projects like 'Memories on a Plate', we aren't just making a book. We are collecting the 'andaaze se' (by estimation) wisdom of families. Whether it is digitizing handwritten archives for a commemorative edition or creating custom anthologies for organizations, we look for partners who understand that a recipe is incomplete without the story of why it was cooked, who it was cooked for, and how it felt to share it.
At Nivaala, partnerships are rooted in a shared belief: recipes are family heirlooms. Our special projects go beyond standard cookbooks because we focus on the visceral connection between food and memory. When we partnered with The Alipore Post for 'Memories on a Plate', we didn't just ask for ingredient lists. We asked for the smells of childhood kitchens, the comfort of a meal during a difficult time, and the silent language of love passed down through generations.
We transform loose memories into structured archives. We work with creators, institutions, and families who want to gather their own collective history. Whether it is an illustrated anthology of 100 Indian kitchens or a custom coffee-table book for a private family reunion, our process involves transcribing oral histories, restoring old photos, and weaving anecdotes into the technical steps of cooking. We see recipes as living artefacts. If you have a collection of stories waiting to be bound, or an organization looking to document hyperlocal culinary traditions, let us talk. We treat every project as a piece of heritage, ensuring that the essence of your family kitchen is preserved for those who come after us.
Nivaala
I started Nivaala because I did not want to lose my mother's voice. I realized that my own search for these lost recipes was something others were also struggling with. Now, through these special projects, I get to help families and communities save their own stories before they fade away.
Let's find your story.
