Building Strong Foundations: Grammar, Phonics & Spelling

At NLI, we believe a child's foundation in language should be built on curiosity, not constant correction. Here is how we make grammar and phonics a natural part of their growth.

Understanding uncountable nouns is a key grammar concept. Here, a student explains that words like 'fish,' 'fruit,' and 'cheese' can be both countable and uncountable depending on the context. This helps build a solid grammar foundation.

We make grammar lessons interactive and engaging. In this session, a student learns about collective nouns, discovering that a group of birds is a 'flock,' a group of wolves is a 'pack,' and a group of fish is a 'school.'

This video focuses on building vocabulary with adjectives ending in 'able' or 'ible.' A student learns words like 'edible,' 'indispensable,' and 'impeccable,' which enhances his descriptive language skills.

Identifying parts of speech is a fundamental grammar skill. Our student Kabir confidently identifies nouns, verbs, adjectives, prepositions, and conjunctions in this quick-fire quiz, showing his strong understanding.

We address common grammar mistakes to improve accuracy. Our students explain rules like using the base form of a verb with 'did' and avoiding double negatives, helping them write and speak correctly.

Acronyms are a part of everyday language. In this video, a student decodes common acronyms like 'FAQ' for 'frequently asked questions' and 'RIP' for 'rest in peace,' improving her language comprehension.

Phonics is the key to unlocking reading. Our summer camp poster highlights the "Magic Sounds" program, which includes sensory alphabet adventures and creative art to make learning letter sounds a magical experience for young children.

About this collection

Instead of endless drills, I focus on the 'why' behind language. Whether it's understanding collective nouns or mastering tricky phonics sounds, we use hands-on games to ensure your child isn't just memorizing rules, but actually feeling the rhythm and structure of English. It’s about building confidence so they can speak without the fear of being wrong.

Making Language Stick, Not Just Memorized

Most children are taught English as a series of rules to be followed. At NLI, in Rajouri Garden, we see it differently. We follow the philosophy of 'Wabi-Sabi'—we embrace the beauty in imperfection. When a child makes a mistake in grammar or spelling, we don't treat it as a failure; we treat it as an opportunity to understand the mechanics of the language better.

The NLI Approach to Foundational English

  • Phonics for Little Ones: We don't just teach the alphabet; we teach the magic of sounds. Through our 'Magic Sounds' program, children use sensory tools, art, and games to connect sounds to letters. This turns reading from a chore into a skill they genuinely own.
  • Grammar Without Fear: We move away from boring, repetitive worksheets. By using real-world examples—like how we group animals into 'flocks' or 'colonies'—we help children visualize language. This makes complex concepts like uncountable nouns or parts of speech feel relatable.
  • Personalized Learning: Whether your child is struggling with basic spelling or needs to refine their creative writing, our small batch sizes (4-8 students) allow me to adapt to their unique pace. We offer both online and offline sessions at our Rajouri Garden centre, ensuring that distance or timing doesn't come between your child and their potential.

My goal is to give your child a 'voice'—not just a grade. By focusing on vocabulary, phonics, and accurate grammar, we aren't just teaching a subject; we are giving them the tools to express their thoughts clearly to the world. If you're looking for an environment where your child feels seen and supported, let’s talk.
