Behind the Craft: How We Make Our Handmade Soy Candles

Ever wonder why handmade candles cost what they do? It’s not just wax and wick. It’s science, patience, and a whole lot of trial and error in my Gurugram studio. Come see how we make it.

A humorous take on the life of a small business owner. This is me, using a plastic drink dispenser to pour wax into a mold because when you're starting out, you make do with what you have.

The number one mistake I made when I started candle making was thinking it's just melting and pouring. This video shows the careful process of pouring wax at the right temperature to avoid flaws.

Your candle might be giving you a headache, and it's likely due to paraffin wax and synthetic fragrances. I only use natural soy wax and premium oils to ensure a clean, non-toxic burn.

There are things I'll never say 'yes' to as a candle maker, like using unsafe oils or skipping burn tests. This video shows my commitment to quality and safety in every candle I produce.

A glimpse into the patient, handcrafted decoration of my scented wax tablets. I place each tiny, hand-painted wax peony by hand to create these beautiful, fragrant pieces.

About Behind the Craft: The Art of Handmade

I don't just pour wax and hope for the best. Every batch goes through a strict burn test—checking wick size, temperature, and fragrance load—because if it doesn't burn cleanly, I won't ship it. You’re paying for safety and the time spent getting that perfect, even melt pool, not just a pretty object for your shelf.

More Than Just Melting Wax

When people ask why I don't mass-produce, this is why. Candle making is chemistry. If the wax is poured too cold, you get sinkholes. If the fragrance-to-wax ratio is off by even a few grams, the scent throw becomes nonexistent or, worse, the candle becomes a safety hazard. I spend weeks testing new vessels to ensure they can handle the heat without shattering.

Why I Stick to Soy

You might notice my candles don't release black soot or give you that typical chemical headache. That is because I refuse to use paraffin. Paraffin is a byproduct of petroleum and, frankly, I don't want to breathe that in my home, so I certainly won't let you breathe it in yours. Using 100% soy wax means a cleaner, slower, and non-toxic burn that respects your indoor air quality.

The Reality of Small Batches

Running Mandy & Co from my studio in Gurugram means I am the CEO, the packer, and the chemist. When you buy a candle here, you are supporting a one-woman operation where everything is made in small lots. This ensures that the peony floral on your wax tablet is hand-placed and that every batch of mithai candles has the right level of detail. It takes time, yes, but it ensures that what you receive is made with heart, not by a machine.

Hi, I’m Aakriti. I started Mandy & Co because I was tired of candles that either looked good or smelled good, but never both—and certainly weren't safe. Everything you see here, I’ve mixed, poured, and tested right here in my studio, often fueled by too much coffee and a desire to make something honest.
