About Runway: Bangalore Times Fashion Week
Runway photography demands split-second timing. Unlike studio work, I cannot reset the lights or ask for a re-walk, so I focus on capturing the exact moment a garment catches the stage light or the model's stride hits its peak. My process involves anticipating the turn at the end of the ramp to ensure the final shot is sharp, clear, and highlights the detail of the clothing.
Shooting events like Bangalore Times Fashion Week requires a specific technical approach. I rely on full-frame cameras paired with a 24-70mm lens, which allows for the versatility needed to switch between wide-angle stage shots and tighter portrait-style frames as the model approaches.
Technical Challenges
- Lighting Control: Fashion show auditoriums often feature harsh, shifting spotlights. I shoot with manual exposure settings to ensure consistent skin tones and fabric texture regardless of how the stage lighting changes.
- Shutter Speed: To freeze movement without blurring, I maintain high shutter speeds. This is crucial for capturing the drape of a saree or the intricate embroidery of a lehenga while the model is in motion.
- Composition: My priority is to keep the focus on the designer's work. Whether it is the metallic sheen of a suit or the delicate gold of a bridal set, I frame shots to ensure the attire remains the hero of the image.
Collaboration with Designers
I understand that for a designer, these photos are not just memories—they are assets for press, social media, and future lookbooks. I coordinate with organizers to understand the flow of the show, ensuring I am positioned to capture every key look of the collection as it makes its way down the ramp.
