The Spiritual Path of Yoga: Connecting Asanas to Tradition

Yoga is a science for the complete harmony of the body, mind, and spirit. In this cluster, I connect traditional Hatha asanas to the profound wisdom found in the Vedas and Puranas, transforming your practice into a journey of self-discovery.

The Shrimad Bhagavad Gita is a wellspring of wisdom for any yogi. My study of these sacred texts informs my teaching, allowing me to share the philosophical underpinnings of the practice and guide you on your spiritual journey.

This is Trivikrama-asana, named for an incarnation of Lord Vishnu who crossed the three worlds in three steps. This advanced standing pose, which requires immense flexibility, tells the story of overcoming ego and recognizing the infinite power of divinity.

Another view of Trivikrama-asana, capturing the full extension and balance of the pose. The story of the dwarf Vamana growing into a giant reminds us of our own limitless potential when we align with a higher purpose.

Ananta-asana is named for Ananta, the serpent upon whom Lord Vishnu rests. This seemingly relaxing pose requires significant concentration to maintain balance, teaching us to find stillness and stability in the midst of cosmic motion.

Simhasana, the Lion Pose, is dedicated to Narasimha, the man-lion incarnation of Lord Vishnu. This powerful practice, which involves a forceful exhalation, is said to build vigor and courage, connecting us to the fierce, protective energy of the divine.

Vrischikasana, the Scorpion Pose, practiced at the Gangaur Ghat in Udaipur. This advanced inversion requires great strength and trust. It teaches us to overcome fear and find balance in challenging situations, transforming our perspective.

Here I am in Padma Sirsasana (Lotus in Headstand) at the sacred Kamakhya Devi Temple, one of the 51 Shakti Pithas. Practicing in such powerful energetic locations deepens the spiritual dimension of the asana.

About this collection

When we practice an asana, we are doing more than just stretching; we are engaging with the history behind the pose. For instance, holding Trivikrama-asana allows us to contemplate the story of Lord Vishnu and the theme of overcoming ego. In my personal training sessions, we move beyond the physical posture to explore these mythological connections, bringing intentionality and focus to your mat so your daily practice becomes a form of active meditation.

Moving Beyond the Physical

In the modern world, we often treat yoga solely as a tool for flexibility or weight management. While these are natural byproducts of a regular practice, they are not the end goal. My approach is rooted in the idea that yoga is a Nitya Abhyasa—a consistent, daily commitment to moving from imperfection to perfection. By integrating the stories of deities like Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu into our sessions, we shift the focus from what the body looks like to how the mind and spirit feel.

The Role of Mythology in Asana

Every asana carries a lineage. When we perform Simhasana, the Lion Pose, we are invoking the fierce, protective energy of Narasimha. Understanding this narrative helps us channel our own courage during challenging times. Similarly, holding a balance pose like Ananta-asana requires the same concentration as the serpent upon which Lord Vishnu rests.

We will explore:

  • Scriptural Context: Understanding the Vedas and Puranas that give birth to these postures.
  • Intention Setting: Using the stories of our deities to anchor your breath and focus.
  • Safe Application: Using props like chairs, blocks, and straps to make these traditional poses accessible, regardless of your current mobility.

How We Will Practice

Whether you are a beginner or looking to deepen your existing practice, my guidance remains consistent: steady, personalized, and rooted in tradition. We do not rush. We observe, we adjust, and we learn. Whether you join my online group sessions or book a one-on-one personal training slot in South Bopal, the focus remains on building a practice that serves your unique needs—be it managing stress, improving posture, or finding peace.
