Silhouettes & Monochrome Wildlife Photography
Sometimes the real story isn't in the colour, but in the shape and shadow. Here, I explore artistic wildlife photography, focusing on form, contrast, and the quiet mood of the wild.
"Bad Hair Day!" A silhouette of a Brahminy Starling against a dramatic, cloudy sunset. I love the character and mood this style of photography creates.
"Winter Gold." A Jungle Babbler silhouetted against a fiery evening sun. The warm colours and sharp outlines make for a beautiful, artistic image.
A silhouette of a Jungle Babbler against an orange sunset. There's a mystery to silhouettes that I find incredibly exciting to capture.
A bird silhouetted on a post, with a cactus nearby. The simple shapes and bold colours create a powerful composition.
A bird perched on a thorny branch, its form perfectly outlined by the setting sun. This is the magic of silhouette photography.
A minimalist silhouette of a bird against a solid orange sky. This peaceful and powerful image is one of my favourites from Gujarat.
A monochrome portrait of an Indian Flapshell Turtle. Black and white photography helps to focus on contrast, highlights, and shadows, details often missed in colour.
A grasshopper in black and white, a study in texture and form. This style brings out the intricate details of the insect's exoskeleton.
A Spotted Owlet peeking from its nest, rendered in black and white. The edit emphasizes its large, captivating eyes and the rough texture of the tree.
A bird stands in the water, its reflection creating a serene, symmetrical image. This minimalist monochrome shot is all about mood and composition.
About The Art of Light: Silhouettes & Monochrome
Shooting in monochrome or capturing a silhouette requires a shift in how I look at my subject. It is not just about what you see, but how the light interacts with the textures of an animal's skin or the sharp outline of a bird against a sunset. If you are looking for images that go beyond standard portraits to something more artistic or mood-driven, this is where we start that conversation.
When I choose to strip away colour, my goal is to force you to look at the details you might otherwise ignore. Black and white photography changes the focus entirely. Take my portraits of the Saw-scaled Viper—instead of getting distracted by the bright environment, you see the intricate, dangerous patterns of its scales, which define its survival.
Similarly, silhouette photography is about mystery. Whether I am in the Western Ghats or the grasslands of Gujarat, waiting for the golden hour allows me to capture a bird like the Jungle Babbler not just as a species, but as a form against a fiery sky. It creates a story of mood and solitude.
These styles are not just 'creative' choices; they are tools I use to highlight textures, contrast, and the raw behavior of wildlife. Whether you are an NGO needing impactful visual storytelling for conservation, or an enthusiast wanting to learn how to manipulate light to tell a deeper story, I bring this same approach to every assignment. We don't just shoot subjects; we shoot the light, the mood, and the quiet truth of the encounter.

I’m Karan. My camera is my way of connecting people to the wild, and sometimes, stripping away the colour is the best way to show the raw truth of an animal's form. Whether it's a viper in the Western Ghats or a bird in the Gujarat grasslands, I’m always chasing that perfect moment where light meets shadow.
