Memorial Portraits Hand-Painted from Old Photos
Keep your loved ones close with a custom oil portrait. I transform old, damaged, or faded photographs into permanent, gallery-quality canvas paintings that honour their memory.
This video shows my process of creating a memorial portrait. I start with an old reference photo and carefully paint a new, lasting tribute in oil on canvas.

About this collection
The most important part of a memorial portrait is the reference photo, and I know many of these are old or damaged. Before I even touch a paintbrush, I spend time digitally reconstructing those blurry features and details. This ensures the final oil painting captures the exact likeness and expression of your loved one, rather than just copying a low-quality snapshot.
When you commission a memorial portrait, you are not just asking for a painting. You are asking for a piece of history. For these projects, I recommend my Classic Heirloom Oil style. Unlike acrylics, which dry fast, oils allow for the slow, meticulous blending needed to create realistic skin tones and soft gradients. This technique brings a level of dignity and life to the canvas that matches the importance of the subject.
The Restoration Process
Many clients come to me with photos from the 1970s, 80s, or even earlier. These images are often scratched, faded, or black-and-white. I handle the restoration work myself, pulling back the details from the original image so we can decide what needs to be highlighted. We work together to ensure the final result looks right.
Why Oil for Memorials
I prefer oils for these specific pieces because of their longevity. We use heavy-duty, double-primed cotton canvas that is stretched and braced to prevent warping over the years. Because of the nature of oil paint, the process takes about 3 to 4 weeks. This includes the time I spend painting and the necessary curing time in my studio. It is a slow process, but it ensures that the painting you receive is durable and archival.
I share progress updates at the sketching and first-layer stages, so you feel connected to the work as it comes together. This is a quiet, respectful process, and I treat every commission with the care I would give my own family photos.
