How I Draw Live Caricatures At Events
People often ask how I manage to capture a likeness in just a few minutes during a busy event. Here is a look at the ink and watercolor techniques I use to turn a quick interaction into a keepsake.
Watch as I draw a father-daughter duo live at an event. The video shows the layering of ink and watercolor and the final reveal to the happy clients.

About Behind the Scenes: My Process
When I sketch live at a wedding or corporate function, I work with archival ink markers and quick-drying watercolor. It is not a long, static pose—usually just 5 to 7 minutes of conversation while I capture the subject's features. The goal is not photorealism, but rather the recognizable, exaggerated spark that makes people smile the moment they see the page.
Live caricature is about performance as much as it is about art. My process starts by asking for a few minutes of patience while I study the subject’s face. I focus on exaggerating key features—like a wide smile or distinct glasses—while keeping the lines clean and sharp with my markers.
I usually set up in a high-traffic area of the venue, such as near the entrance or the bar, where guests can stop by easily. I bring everything I need: my textured paper, archival ink, and watercolor sets. Once the ink is down, I add the color wash, which dries quickly so the guest can walk away with the finished piece immediately without worrying about smudging.
Whether it is a child at a birthday party or a guest at a corporate conference, the interaction is the most important part of the process. I talk to the subjects while I draw, which helps me catch their expression better. If you are planning an event in Mumbai or elsewhere, I just need a well-lit corner to set up my station and enough space for guests to stand while they watch the portrait come to life.
