About Behind the Art: Process & Studies
Whether I am working with a thick brush pen for live sketches or plotting out geometric shapes for a digital piece, my focus is always on capturing the energy of the subject. You will see me layering block colors and refining my line art to make sure every custom caricature really pops.
My process changes depending on whether I am drawing live at an event or crafting a custom portrait from a photo. For live events, speed is the priority. I rely on bold, continuous lines and quick shading with markers to create a fun, recognizable portrait in just a few minutes. I am always practicing my exaggerations and playing with different features to make sure I can capture a likeness instantly, even in the middle of a wedding or corporate event.
When I work on digital caricatures, I have more time to experiment with the style. I often start with a rough sketch, then move to block colors and digital shading to add depth. I love playing with different forms, sometimes even using geometric shapes to build a character, as you can see in some of my studies.
I also do a lot of practice work outside of my client commissions. Creating tributes for icons or just sketching characters from reference photos helps me keep my skills sharp. If you are looking for a personalized gift, like a digital illustration or a wooden standee, I follow a similar collaborative process. We start with your photos, and I build the caricature around your specific requirements, whether you want a superhero theme or just a funny depiction of a pet. I am always happy to share this journey from a simple sketch to a finished piece of art.
