The Artist's Process: How I Sketch Live

From a blank page to a personal memento. Take a look at how I turn a few quick, confident strokes into a keepsake your guests will actually want to take home.

A close-up of my hands at work. I use confident strokes with a marker to create the main features, then add depth and personality with subtle watercolor shading, all in a matter of minutes.

This video shows the evolution of a sketch, from the initial black outline to the final colored portrait. Each step is done quickly and efficiently to keep the process engaging for the person being drawn.

The classic reveal. After finishing a sketch on my easel, I turn it around to show the guest. This video captures that simple but powerful moment of sharing the finished artwork.

My portable setup includes a wooden easel, clipboard, and a palette of watercolors. This allows me to work efficiently in any event space, creating colorful and lively portraits on the spot.

Here you can see my technique of using a yellow marker to add highlights and warmth to a portrait. These small details are what make each live caricature pop.

About The Artist's Process

I treat every sketch like a mini-performance, using acid-free paper and professional markers to ensure the result is frame-worthy. My setup is entirely self-contained; I just need a 4x4 ft footprint and two chairs to get started, so I can focus entirely on engaging with your guests rather than worrying about logistics.

How the Magic Happens

When I arrive at an event, the first step is setting up my station to be as inviting as possible. For traditional paper sketches, I use a portable easel, clip-on LED lighting, and high-quality cartridge paper. I work with bold markers for the initial outline, followed by water-based shading to bring depth to the caricature. Because I work in real-time, the key is keeping the energy high—I talk with the person I am sketching, keeping the vibe fun so the final result reflects their personality.

Traditional vs. Digital

If you prefer a modern setup, I switch to my digital workflow. Using an iPad Pro, I sketch directly onto the screen, which can be mirrored to a monitor or TV so the audience can watch the drawing unfold in real-time. This is a massive hit at trade shows and corporate gatherings because it turns the act of creation into a spectator event. Plus, I manage a compact printer on-site, so guests walk away with a high-quality 4x6 glossy print in seconds.

Setting the Scene

No matter the style, my goal is to blend into your venue seamlessly. I handle all the material logistics—from protective sleeves for paper sketches to the digital file management for social media sharing. All I ask from the venue is a small corner with good lighting and, ideally, a spot where guests can gather comfortably. Whether you are hosting a wedding in Mumbai or a corporate event across India, my process is designed to be low-maintenance for you and high-entertainment for your guests.
