Timeless Black & White Portraits

Stripping away color reveals the raw emotion and form underneath. My black and white portraits focus on light and shadow, capturing a cinematic quality that feels both classic and immediate.

The craft of making simplicity look so gorgeous. This series with Vartika Singh was an exercise in minimalism, using just one light source to sculpt her form. It proves that with the right subject and light, less is truly more.

It was an honor to create this portrait of the violin maestro, Dr. L. Subramaniam. The black and white treatment adds to the timelessness of the image, focusing on his deep connection with his instrument.

The power of an athlete. This black and white portrait of boxer Lovlina Borgohain captures the grit and determination in a single, intense moment of action. The focus is purely on her expression and the physicality of her sport.

"The camera is an instrument that teaches people how to see without a camera." This quote by Dorothea Lange perfectly describes my philosophy. This portrait of Vartika Singh embodies that idea of seeing beyond the surface.

A black and white version of a behind the scenes shot with Mahesh Babu. Stripping away the color brings a different mood to the image, highlighting the texture of his denim shirt and his contemplative pose.

The ever-stylish Sonam Kapoor. This black and white portrait has a classic, old-world glamour feel. The lighting creates a soft focus on her, while the rich textures of her outfit add depth and sophistication.

A study in form and silhouette with Sonam Kapoor. This minimalist black and white shot focuses on the elegant lines of her dress and her graceful posture, creating a timeless and artistic fashion portrait.

About this collection

My black and white portrait sessions are about sculpting with light, not just capturing a face. When we work together, I rely on a single, precise light source to emphasize your features and create natural contouring. This approach requires trust and patience, but it produces high-contrast images with depth that standard studio lighting often loses.

True black and white photography is a deliberate choice, not a filter applied after the fact. In my studio at Lower Parel, I use medium format Fujifilm GFX cameras to ensure every texture, from the fabric of your clothing to the subtle changes in skin tone, is rendered with absolute clarity.

When we strip away color, we remove the distraction, leaving only the composition and the raw emotion of the subject. My process involves a pre-shoot consultation where we discuss the narrative of the portrait. Are we aiming for the high-fashion editorial look or something more grounded and cinematic?

I often work with a dedicated team of stylists and makeup artists who understand the nuance of monochrome. They know that specific contouring shades are needed to define bone structure under studio lights. Whether you are looking for an individual professional portrait, a set of character studies, or a family legacy piece, the goal remains the same: a timeless image that stands out because of what it reveals, not because of what it shouts. If you have a specific concept or a mood you want to capture, let us discuss how to build that story together.

I’m Jatin. I believe the camera is an instrument that teaches us how to see, not just capture. Whether it’s a legend or a new face, I’m always chasing the raw, honest story hidden in the shadows.
