Chiguru Residence: Architecture for Compact Urban Plots
On a tight 30' x 45' site in Bengaluru, we balanced modern form with nature. This project walk-through shows how we iterated on the facade design to maximise space and light.
This was my second design proposal for the "Chiguru" residence facade. It explores a different material combination, with a darker concrete texture and a modified screen design, showcasing the iterative process of arriving at the final architectural look.
This was the first design proposal I created for the "Chiguru" residence. It features a lighter, all-white facade with wooden louvered windows and prominent planters, establishing the modern and green aesthetic for the home.
About Project: The Chiguru Residence
We did not land on this design in one go. The images here highlight our iterative process for the Chiguru residence: one proposal experiments with a light, airy aesthetic featuring wooden louvers and greenery, while the other explores a bolder, concrete-heavy texture. For a 30' x 45' plot, we find that testing these material combinations early is essential to ensure the home feels open rather than closed off.
Designing for compact urban plots requires a different mindset. At Inari Atelier, we focus on how the house breathes. In the Chiguru project, our goal was to integrate the outdoors into the daily experience, even with limited square footage.
We prioritize these elements in our residential architecture:
- Materiality and Texture: We move between raw concrete finishes and warm wooden elements to add character without clutter.
- Biophilic Integration: Planters and screens are not just decorative. They act as natural filters and privacy buffers in dense city neighbourhoods.
- Light and Ventilation: Using louvered windows and calculated facade openings allows us to manipulate sunlight, preventing harsh glare while maintaining airflow.
Our process involves creating multiple 3D visualisations before we break ground. This helps us ensure that the final execution matches the initial vision. Whether it is a fresh build or a renovation, we approach every 30' x 40' or 30' x 45' plot as an opportunity to prove that you do not need a massive footprint to have a home that feels grand and peaceful.
