We step outside the therapy room to teach children practical life skills like shopping, money management, and social interaction in real-world settings.

This video shows the beginning of an ADL training session. We give the child a small amount of money and the task of going to a shop, encouraging independent thinking and decision-making.

Part of our ADL training involves teaching children to communicate their needs. Here, the child learns to go back to the shopkeeper to exchange an item, a crucial real-world problem-solving skill.

The successful conclusion of an ADL training task. The child proudly shows the items he bought and calculates the money spent, demonstrating improved communication, math skills, and independence.

About Developing Real-World Life Skills

In our ADL (Activities of Daily Living) sessions, we move beyond textbooks. Watch how we give a child ₹20 and the task of buying specific items at a local shop. It is not just about shopping; it is about decision-making, handling social interaction with the shopkeeper, and managing money. These are the skills that build real independence, one transaction at a time.

Beyond the Therapy Room

Life skills training is where theory meets reality. While classroom sessions build vocabulary and motor skills, our real-world training ensures these abilities translate into daily independence. We take children through practical scenarios—like visiting a neighbourhood store, handling currency, and communicating specific needs to others.

Why Real-World Practice Matters

Many children struggle with generalization—taking a skill learned in a controlled environment and applying it to a new setting. By stepping into a real shop, we remove the safety net of a therapist hovering over them. When a child makes a mistake, like buying the wrong item, it becomes a vital learning moment. They learn to self-correct, communicate the error, and try again. This builds the confidence to navigate the world independently.

Our Approach to Daily Living

  • Decision Making: We give children the agency to choose within a budget, which reinforces value and preference.
  • Social Navigation: Interaction with third parties, such as shopkeepers, helps children practice social greetings and clear communication outside their family bubble.
  • Problem Solving: If a shop does not have an item, or a transaction goes wrong, we use these as teachable moments to handle frustration and find alternatives.

Every successful transaction, every calculated ₹20 spent, and every social interaction is a milestone. We celebrate these wins with as much enthusiasm as any academic achievement because these are the practical skills that help them lead a more independent life.
