The Belagavi Home: A 'Glocal' Architectural Vision
A home designed for the tropical climate of Belagavi, where we blended vernacular principles with modern structural language to create a sanctuary that connects the family to the outdoors.
This rendering shows the full exterior concept. The design grounds itself with heavy stone walls and a solid base, while the upper floors feature lighter, vaulted forms that give the home its unique contemporary-vernacular character.
A closer view of the entrance and carport. The material palette includes rough-hewn stone, smooth plaster, and vertical wooden slats, creating a rich textural contrast that is both modern and timeless.
The street-facing view of the Belagavi home concept. We integrated landscaping and boundary walls to create a gentle transition from the public street to the private residence, using natural materials to blend the building with its surroundings.
An interior rendering illustrating the split-level design. This approach creates visual connections between different zones, like the dining area and upper-level corridors, making the home feel unified and spacious.
The dining and living space is designed to be open and airy, with large windows and doors connecting to outdoor greenery. The use of natural wood furniture and locally sourced Basalt stone flooring adds warmth and earthiness.
This view from an upper-level bridge shows how light filters through the home. The curved ceiling and stone-clad walls guide the eye through the space, highlighting the interplay of volumes and materials.

About this collection
Notice the vaulted roof profiles and split-level floor plates—these aren't just for dramatic effect. In a climate like Belagavi, this volumetric control creates a natural stack effect, allowing warm air to rise and escape while drawing cool breezes through the living spaces without relying heavily on artificial cooling.
Our Approach: Distilling Regional Identity
The goal was to synthesize a structure that recognizes its geography rather than imposing a foreign aesthetic. We refer to this as 'Glocal'—a meeting of global design rigor and local material sensitivity. The architecture is grounded in the earth, with the horizontal massing reflecting the local landscape, while the upper-level vaults introduce a contemporary verticality that catches the light.
Spatial Strategy: Connected Volumes
Standard multi-storey homes often suffer from a disconnect between floors. We utilized split levels here to eliminate that barrier. A bridge on the upper level looks directly into the dining area below, creating a continuous visual thread. This allows family members to maintain a sense of connection even when they are in separate zones, fostering interaction within the home.
Materiality and Climate
We intentionally avoided synthetic veneers in favor of material honesty. Using local Basalt stone provides the necessary thermal mass to regulate interior temperatures and creates a tactile, rugged connection to the site. The deep-set windows and stone louvers act as protective shields, tempering the harsh afternoon sun and ensuring the interior remains comfortable throughout the day. This is a design built to grow with the family, retaining the memories of the past while remaining future-ready.
