The Gardener's Journey: Lessons from My Terrace

Gardening is a roller coaster. I have had my share of failed seedlings and peacock raids, but the taste of that first homegrown tomato makes it all worth it. Here is my journey from soil to harvest.

Gardening isn't just about growing plants, it's about growing peace of mind. When I get my hands in the soil, my stress drops and my mind quiets down. This is where I find my peace.

Gardening is all about patience and believing in tomorrow. You have to go 'ahista ahista' with the process. After many failures, the joy of finally harvesting my own veggies was incredible. I'm grateful I didn't give up.

A quick tour of my winter kitchen garden. I'm growing everything from radishes, carrots, and broccoli to different types of tomatoes. I also show some of the damage done by peacocks, because that's part of the story too.

A look back at my year. It was full of lots of work, from shifting plants and transporting soil to setting up my new terrace garden. All the effort was worth it, and I'm ready for a fruitful year ahead.

This was a difficult moment, uprooting my old garden. My house was an empty structure, and the plants that made it a heaven were gone. But this was just a transition to a new home with a new garden.

A beautiful sunset view from my balcony, with pots full of petunia flowers. Moments like these are a simple, beautiful reward of gardening.

About The Gardener's Journey

It isn't always picture-perfect on my terrace. One month I am harvesting fresh broccoli, and the next, a local peacock has decided my seedlings are a buffet. My green heaven has seen soil shifts, heavy lifting, and plenty of trial and error. The trick to all this isn't having a naturally green thumb, it is just sticking with the process, ahista ahista, even when things do not go as planned.

Building My Green Heaven

When I first started, I had no idea what I was doing. I failed multiple times, lost seeds, and dealt with plants drying out. But that is the reality of gardening. My terrace is not a catalog-perfect display; it is a working space built with sweat, patience, and a lot of DIY jugaad. I reuse old tin sheets for raised beds and rely on dry leaves to keep the soil light. If you are looking to start, do not get intimidated by the fancy setups you see online.

The Reality of Delhi Gardening

Delhi winters and summers are harsh. Whether it is shielding my plants from the scorching sun with a green net or dealing with persistent pests like mealybugs, I have learned that you have to work with the climate, not against it. I share my exact process here, from my 40-30-30 potting mix formula to how I use kitchen waste to nourish my soil.

Why I Share My Failures

I talk about the peacock attacks and the crop failures because I want you to know that it happens to everyone. Gardening is therapy, but it requires resilience. When you finally bite into a tomato you grew yourself, the taste is completely different from what you buy at the store. It is that 'asli' (real) flavor that makes the daily effort—watering, pruning, and checking for bugs—completely worth it. If you are ready to start your own kitchen garden, I am here to help you avoid my initial mistakes.

Hi, I am Himanshu. If you ask my friends, they will say I spent all my money on plants, and yeah, guilty as charged. My terrace is my green heaven, built with my own hands, sweat, and a bit of madness.
