My Gardening Journey: Urban Gardening Tips for Beginners
Hi guys, I'm Shailee! Come follow my gardening adventures, where I share the real wins, the fails, and the simple joy of watching things grow in tiny spaces.
This was me in my garden back home, just before moving to a new city for college. I even brought some plants with me to start my new gardening journey.
Just me, peeking out from my happy place. My balcony is crowded with plants like pothos, wandering jew, and lemongrass, and I wouldn't have it any other way.
A happy selfie with my giant pothos vine and aloe vera plant in the background. Being surrounded by green is my therapy.
A happy moment while repotting. There's something so calming about holding a plant and feeling its roots in your hands.
I was so thrilled to be featured in an article by SheThePeople Hindi. It was wonderful to share my story and my belief that gardening is a way to connect with nature.

About this collection
I started by growing plants in old containers on a cramped hostel balcony, so I know that 'space' and 'budget' are often just excuses we make for ourselves. My approach is all about using what you have—repurposing dabba (boxes) and kitchen scraps—to create a functional space, rather than buying expensive gear that you might not need when you are just starting out.
Gardening isn't always about the perfect, lush photos you see online. Some days I am harvesting fresh gourds, and other days I am battling aphids or losing corn to cheeky monkeys. It is a real, messy, beautiful process, and I am here to show you that you do not need a massive yard or fancy equipment to start your own little patch of nature at home.
Whether you are in Indore or Delhi NCR, I help beginners set up everything from simple balcony flower corners to full-fledged kitchen gardens. If you have a small balcony or a sunny window sill, we can make it work. I focus on container vegetable gardening—growing staples like tomatoes, brinjals, and chillies—using organic soil mixes and simple trellis designs for climbing plants like bottle gourd (lauki).
My goal is to teach you how to be self-sufficient. We cover:
- Soil Prep: Using the right mix of cocopeat and vermicompost to keep plants healthy.
- Pest Management: Using neem oil and natural methods instead of harsh chemicals.
- Budget Hacks: How to reuse household items as planters to reduce waste.
It is all about starting small. You can begin with a few low-maintenance indoor plants like pothos or syngonium to get comfortable, and then scale up to growing your own leafy greens. If you are feeling stuck or just want to learn, join me in exploring the joy of getting your hands dirty. Let’s make your home your favorite green spot.
