Gardening Tools & Supplies I Trust
I often get asked what I use to make my terrace garden thrive. Here are the specific tools and supplies—from drainage-friendly grow bags to high-yield seeds—that I actually use and recommend.
I got these grow bags and a winter vegetable seed kit from Organic Bazar. The quality is amazing, and the germination rate of the seeds has been great, as you can see from my healthy tomato and carrot seedlings.
About Additional Work
Getting the right gear makes terrace gardening a lot less frustrating, but you really don't need fancy, expensive stuff. I swear by quality grow bags with proper drainage and reliable seed kits, because there is nothing worse than waiting weeks for a plant to sprout only to find out the seeds weren't viable.
When you are setting up a kitchen garden in a city like Delhi, your equipment needs to be as tough as your plants. Here is what I look for before I recommend any supply:
Why Quality Matters
- Drainage is Everything: Many store-bought pots drown your roots. I look for grow bags with proper drainage holes that prevent root rot while keeping the soil aerated. If your mitti (soil) stays soggy, your plants won't survive the monsoon or heavy watering.
- Germination Rates: I’ve failed so many times with cheap seeds that refuse to sprout. A good seed kit should have a high germination rate, especially for winter staples like carrots, spinach, and tomatoes. It saves you the heartbreak of empty pots.
My Go-To Essentials
I always tell beginners: keep it simple.
- UV-Stabilized Grow Bags: They need to survive the harsh Delhi sun without tearing or fading. Look for high GSM fabric.
- Season-Specific Seeds: Don't just buy random packets. Use seeds that are suited for the current season (like bhindi in summer or broccoli in winter).
- Organic Boosters: Avoid chemical fertilizers. Stick to things that are safe for your food, like neem khali for pest control or bone meal for calcium.
Gardening is ahista ahista—a slow process. Having the right tools won't make it faster, but it will make it successful. If you are struggling to find good quality supplies or aren't sure what to buy for your specific balcony size, just ask me. I’m happy to share what works.
