To celebrate National Moth Week, we set up a light screen at our Sorkha site to see what nocturnal insects would appear. The night holds a surprising amount of life, and this is a unique way to document urban biodiversity.
Documenting the moths attracted to our light screen. By photographing and identifying these species, we contribute valuable data to global citizen science projects that map insect populations.
About A World of Wings: Butterfly, Dragonfly & Moth Walks
We do not do formal tours where you just tick off a checklist. Instead, these walks are about slowing down in our restored urban forests to notice the tiny details most people walk right past. I or my team members will show you how to identify host plants, spot insect eggs on leaves, and even witness dragonfly wings that are naturally antibacterial. It is a hands-on lesson in how pollinators keep our city green.
Nature has its own intelligence, and when we stop interfering, the insects return on their own. These walks are our way of showing you that reality. We operate at a slow pace because you cannot rush discovery.
What we explore
We focus on the bio-indicators of a healthy forest. If you see dragonflies hunting near a pond or a variety of moths on a screen, you know the ecosystem is thriving. During our dragonfly sessions, we often talk about 'nanokilling'—the incredible way dragonfly wings use tiny spikes to fight bacteria without any chemical help. It is one of those facts that makes you respect the insect world a lot more.
Why our walks are different
We avoid the standard 'nature hike' format. We have set up specific spots like insect hotels and pollinator gardens to increase the chances of sightings. If you join us for a night session, we use a simple white sheet and light setup to screen for moths—a fascinating way to see the sheer diversity of nocturnal life in places like our Sorkha site.
Whether you are a family, a group of students, or a photographer looking for macro shots, we provide the field guides and magnifying glasses. We just ask that you bring your curiosity. You will leave with a better understanding of how soil, plants, and insects work together to create a balanced forest right here in the middle of Delhi NCR.
