The Masters & The Modern: South Indian Art Exhibition
Explore a landmark collection where traditional techniques meet contemporary expression, featuring rare masterpieces from Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala.
I invite you to explore 'The Masters and the Modern: South Edition,' an exhibition focusing on art from Southern India. We are showcasing how artists from Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala have redefined their visual language over time, exploring new mediums and themes. The show is a journey through the cultural tapestry of the region.
A glimpse into our 'The Masters & The Modern: South Edition' exhibition, a showcase that brings together legendary maestros and today's most compelling contemporary artists. This landmark exhibition features over 50 artworks, celebrating the artistic lineage of South India.
Anand Bekwad's work on the Mahakumbh is a personal favorite from our South Edition showcase. An artist from Belgaum, he has a fantastic eye for detail, capturing aerial views of the Kumbh sites with intricate lines and a brilliant use of color. These acrylic on canvas paintings are a visual translation of his deep connection to spirituality.
This 1961 dry pastel on paper is by K. Srinivasulu, a renowned artist from the Madras Art Movement. Influenced by the Bengal school, this work shows a dancer in a seated movement, braiding her hair. The distinct lines and bold strokes make this a rare and intensely beautiful piece.
A striking oil painting by M.F. Husain, featured in our 'The Masters & The Modern' exhibition. The piece captures a woman in a pink turban holding a rooster, rendered with the artist's signature expressive and bold brushwork.
In this video, we explore 'Gajendra Moksha' by M. Reddeppa Naidu. The painting masterfully captures the moment Lord Vishnu descends to rescue the elephant Gajendra. It is a visual hymn to courage, grace, and the eternal connection between the mortal and the divine, now on display at our South Edition exhibition.
This chapter of 'The Masters & The Modern' turns its gaze toward Tamil Nadu, home to a rich lineage of artists. This showcase captures the depth and diversity of the region’s visual language, from striking contemporary expressions to works rooted in tradition.
Here, I discuss a powerful abstract work by G.S. Shenoy, one of Karnataka's most well-known artists. Hailing from Udupi, he had a very personalized association with nature. This mixed media piece is from a curious phase where he experimented with new mediums, resulting in bold, beautiful, and much-loved works.
If South India were to boast of its own impressionist artist, it would be Surya Prakash. This piece, 'Pool of Life,' is a mesmerizing ode to nature, capturing the fleeting beauty of light and movement. The play of color and texture invites the viewer into a moment of serenity.
This untitled abstract masterpiece by Achuthan Kudallur unfolds as a symphony of emotion. Shapes and patterns emerge from a layered surface, creating a dialogue between chaos and harmony. Kudallur crafts a window into a realm where forms dissolve and creativity flows.
About The Masters & The Modern: South Edition
This exhibition brings together over 50 artworks, creating a dialogue between the heritage of the Madras Art Movement and the innovative spirit of contemporary creators. As you walk through these pieces, you will notice not just the final visual impact, but the diversity of mediums—from dry pastels on paper and mixed media experiments to oils on canvas—each revealing how artists from across the South have redefined their visual language over time.
Our 'The Masters & The Modern' series was born from a commitment to map the visual language of South India across time. We move beyond simple categorization, instead creating a narrative that bridges the gap between legendary masters and today’s contemporary visionaries.
A Journey Through Technique and Form
Observe the influence of the Bengal School in the works of K. Srinivasulu, whose dry pastels capture dancers with a fluidity that feels both ancient and immediate. Contrast this with the impressionistic nature studies of Surya Prakash, where light behaves as a physical element on the canvas, or the spiritual, aerial geometry in the Mahakumbh series by Anand Bekwad.
For the discerning collector, this collection serves as a study in how technique defines the era. Whether it is the rhythmic intensity of R.B. Bhaskaran’s Theyyam depictions, where bold black and gold presence commands the space, or the layered, abstract textures of Achuthan Kudallur, every piece offers a distinct history.
Curatorial Philosophy
We believe art is not just an object to be sold; it holds lineage, legacy, and longing. We have carefully curated these works to show not just the 'who' of South Indian art, but the 'how.' From the intricate lines of Adimoolam’s Ganesha series to the raw energy in G.S. Shenoy’s mixed media abstractions, these pieces invite you to slow down. We invite you to visit our gallery on Lavelle Road to experience these conversations in person, as no digital image can capture the weight of the paint or the vibrancy of the pigment.
