Mastering the Walk: Leash Skills & Sniffaris
A calm, stress-free walk is possible. We will skip the harsh tools and focus on building a partnership where you and your dog explore the city safely together.
Leash walking is a skill that must be actively taught. This video breaks down common mistakes people make, like using the wrong leash length or not allowing sniffing, and explains how to walk as a cooperative team.
If you find leash walking stressful, you're not alone. This video provides practical tips for achieving calmer walks, such as practicing indoors first, keeping the leash loose, and using high-value treats in distracting environments.
A leash is a tool for safety and harmony, not for control. A good leash walk is a reflection of a strong relationship, built on patience and teaching your dog that walking with you is a rewarding experience.
Leash walking is a team effort. When you and your dog learn to walk in sync across different environments, the walk becomes an enjoyable bonding experience rather than a constant struggle.
Having a dog means learning to slow down. This video is a reminder to be patient on walks and let your dog enjoy the simple things, like shredding a twig they found. These moments are what make your bond special.
A 'sniffari' is a walk where your dog gets to lead the way with their nose. Allowing your dog to sniff is crucial for their mental well-being, as it reduces stress and provides important stimulation. I encourage more sniffaris for all dogs.
Daily walks are important for both your and your dog's well-being. Dogs are not meant to be homebodies. Getting out and exploring the world together is one of the most important parts of their day.
A walk can be more than just walking. I teach dogs the art of slowing down and just observing the world. This helps build calmness and tolerance for different sights and sounds, which is a highly underrated skill.
Once your dog's basic obedience is solid, you can give them more freedom to explore on walks. Here, Bagheera is enjoying sniffing and checking in with me, showing the trust we've built through consistent training.
Before you even start regular walks, it's important to desensitize your puppy to the collar and leash. I show owners how to create a positive association with these tools so the puppy sees them as a signal for fun adventures.
About Mastering the Walk: Leash Skills & Sniffaris
The secret to a good walk isn't a tight leash—it's the 'J' shape. If you keep the leash slack and give your dog space to sniff, you are letting them explore while staying connected to you. It is a shift from 'control' to 'cooperation', and it is usually the first thing we work on during my home visits to help you find that rhythm.
Why Your Dog Pulls (And Why It Is Not Their Fault)
Most people think a pulling dog is a disobedient one. The reality is usually different. Your dog is likely overwhelmed by the sensory overload of city life in Bangalore. They want to investigate everything at once, and when you pull back to stop them, they often pull harder against the tension. It becomes a tug-of-war that neither of you enjoys.
The 'Sniffari' Approach
I advocate for 'sniffaris'—walks where the dog gets to lead with their nose. Sniffing is mentally exhausting in the best way possible. It lowers their heart rate and reduces stress far more effectively than just marching them in a straight line for kilometers. When we incorporate sniffing into our training, your dog becomes calmer and more responsive because their needs are actually being met.
How We Will Train Together
- The Environment: I come to you. We work in your specific neighborhood, your local park, and your apartment complex because that is where the real-life distractions happen.
- The Equipment: We will assess what you are currently using. Sometimes a simple switch in technique or tools can instantly reduce the friction on your walks.
- The Process: We start slow. We do not jump straight into busy streets. We practice in low-distraction zones until your dog understands that walking near you is rewarding and safe.
- Your Role: You will learn to read your dog’s body language. Are they stressed? Are they over-threshold? You will become the person who helps them navigate the world, rather than just the person holding the other end of the lead.
