Household Management Training for Dogs
Creating a harmonious home environment is about more than just rules. It is about understanding your dog and integrating them into your daily flow for a calm, happy life together.
In a multi-dog household, teaching dogs to coexist peacefully is essential. It's not just about playing; it's about learning to be calm around each other and maintaining a strong bond with the humans in the house.
Coexistence is key in a two-dog household. This video offers three quick tips for encouraging a healthy relationship, such as ensuring the older dog gets plenty of attention and teaching the puppy not to be overly energetic with them.
Living with two dogs is a joy, but it requires some specific tools and strategies. This video shares some of my must-have items for a multi-dog household, from durable toys to ways to give each dog individual attention.
Training isn't just about formal sessions. It's about integrating your dog into your daily, mundane routines. Here, I show how including your dog while you do simple chores teaches them to be calm and settled in the house.
The "Place" command is one of the most useful things you can teach your dog. It gives them a designated spot to relax and teaches them the important art of doing nothing, which is crucial for a calm household.
Is your dog well-versed in the art of doing nothing? After their needs for exercise and enrichment are met, it's important that they also know how to switch off and relax. This is a skill we can teach them.
The small, quiet moments with our dogs are just as important as the active ones. Teaching a dog to just "be" and relax with you is a key part of training, especially for dogs living in apartments.
About this collection
If you struggle with the constant demands of a dog that cannot switch off, try the 'Place' command. It is not just about keeping your dog on a mat, it is teaching them the art of doing nothing while you are busy with work or chores. When your dog learns to settle in a designated spot, they stop pacing, barking, and seeking constant engagement, giving both of you the breathing room you need during the day.
Building a Harmonious Household
Many of us bring a dog home hoping for a companion, but end up feeling overwhelmed by the constant activity. In a busy city like Bengaluru, your home should be a sanctuary, not a source of stress. True household management is not about suppressing your dog's instincts; it is about channeling their energy so you can coexist comfortably.
The Art of Doing Nothing
One of the biggest challenges for high-energy breeds or puppies is the inability to 'switch off'. We often feel we need to be engaging them constantly. However, teaching a dog to settle, or 'place', is essential. It tells them: 'I am busy right now, and you are safe to relax.' This skill prevents resource guarding, constant whining for attention, and destructive behavior when you are occupied.
Integrating Daily Routines
Training does not always need to happen in a formal session. You can integrate it into your mundane tasks:
- During Chores: If you are cooking or folding laundry, have your dog practice a stay or a settle nearby. This teaches them to exist in the same space as you without needing constant interaction.
- Managing Multiple Dogs: If you have more than one pet, encourage healthy coexistence by ensuring each dog has their own space, and more importantly, their own bond with you. Do not assume they will entertain each other without supervision.
Handling The Tough Days
Life is messy. Sometimes dogs get sick, or they bring in mud from a walk. Being prepared, rather than frustrated, changes the experience for both of you. Whether it is desensitizing your dog to being touched for medication or using puzzle toys to distract them while you wipe their paws, these moments are opportunities to build trust rather than conflict.
