Leash Manners & Reactivity Training for Calm Walks
Is walking your dog becoming a stressful tug-of-war? I help you move past the lunging and barking to build a calm, confident connection with your pet during every outing.
A long leash can be a fantastic tool to give your dog a sense of off-leash freedom while keeping them safe. In this video, I share a pro tip on how to correctly attach the leash to a harness to prevent neck injuries and make outdoor adventures more fun.
This graphic is for my "Loosen the Leash" pack walk event in Bangalore. These walks are a great opportunity for hands-on learning in a controlled environment, perfect for practicing leash skills and socializing your dog around others.
Dog training is more than just "sit" and "stay". It's about teaching life skills like impulse control. Watch how I work with this Golden Retriever, teaching him patience and engagement even when he's excited, a skill that is vital for calm walks.
Sometimes the best therapy for a reactive or hyperactive dog is simply letting them be a dog. This video shows the joy of a "decompression walk" where sniffing, running, and exploring are encouraged. It's a simple way to reduce stress and strengthen your bond.
About this collection
If your dog lunges or barks at every trigger, the first step is rarely a tighter leash; it is often a simple gear change. I frequently start by assessing if your current equipment, like a front-clip harness or short lead, is causing physical discomfort or frustration. We will evaluate your daily walking routine to see if we need to switch to a back-clip harness or adjust your leash length to give your dog the space they actually need to feel safe in high-distraction environments.
Reactivity is often misunderstood as aggression, when in reality, it is usually a manifestation of fear, frustration, or a lack of impulse control. Many dogs I meet in Bangalore are simply over-aroused by the environment—the noise, traffic, and other dogs—and have not learned how to cope with that stimulation.
The 'Decompression' Approach
My method moves away from suppression. We do not punish the bark; we address the underlying feeling. Often, this starts with 'decompression walks.' Instead of trying to train your dog during a high-stress walk, we look at how to structure these outings so your dog can actually relax. Sniffing and exploring are not just activities; they are essential self-soothing behaviors for a dog.
Practical Steps We Will Take
- Trigger Assessment: We will identify exactly what sets your dog off. Is it a specific size of dog? A cyclist? A loud truck? Knowing the trigger allows us to create a distance plan.
- Impulse Control: We work on engagement games indoors before testing them in public. This builds a foundation where your dog looks to you for guidance, rather than reacting on instinct.
- Gear Audit: Ill-fitting harnesses can physically impede a dog's movement, increasing their stress. I will guide you on using long leashes (15-20ft) properly, which offers your dog freedom while keeping them secure.
Whether you are dealing with a puppy who is learning to walk or an adult dog with established reactivity patterns, my goal is to turn our sessions into a manageable plan. You will receive a clear, actionable protocol via email or WhatsApp, allowing you to practice these techniques consistently until they become second nature.

I used to be scared of dogs myself, so I truly understand that overwhelmed feeling when your pet reacts in public. Now, I focus on positive, science-backed training to help you and your dog find that middle ground where walks become a joy instead of a chore.
