Crate Training: Building Your Dog's Safe Space

A crate isn't a cage, it's a sanctuary. I help dogs in Bengaluru build a positive, secure relationship with their crate, whether it's for travel anxiety or creating a den they love.

Izzy, a 4-year-old Golden Retriever, is preparing for a flight. Here you can see the progress of her crate conditioning. My goal is to make the travel crate a calm, familiar space for her, reducing stress during her long journey.

This is Rory, a 1-year-old Golden Retriever, learning the 'crate' command. We use positive reinforcement to build his confidence, teaching him to enter and settle in the crate willingly.

Crate training starts with making the crate an interesting and rewarding place to be. Here, Rani the Golden Retriever puppy is learning to step into the crate on her own to find treats, the very first step in creating a positive association.

It's important to let a dog think for themselves. Instead of just luring, I'm using hand signals and verbal cues to let Shiro, a Golden Retriever puppy, figure out that going into his crate is the right choice. This builds problem-solving skills.

Training is a family affair. I love involving kids in the process, as it teaches them responsibility and helps them bond with their pet. Here, a young trainer is doing a fantastic job practicing crate commands with her Golden Retriever, Zoe.

Meet Casper, an Indie pup, relaxing in his crate. A crate provides a safe, den-like space for a puppy to rest and decompress, which is essential for their development and helps with house training.

About this collection

Think of a crate as your dog’s personal bedroom—a place where they can switch off and decompress. Many parents worry they are locking their dog up, but when done correctly, a crate gives a dog the freedom to relax without worrying about household chaos. I focus on positive conditioning so your dog enters voluntarily, making it the perfect tool for travel safety, potty training, or simply giving them a quiet spot during guest visits.

Why Crate Training Matters

Many people view crates as punishment, but that is a misconception. If you introduce it correctly, a crate becomes your dog’s den, providing security when they feel overwhelmed. It is essential for safety during air travel, calming an anxious dog, or managing a puppy during house-training. My process involves positive reinforcement—no force, just patience.

My Approach to Conditioning

I teach your dog to associate the crate with high-value treats and rest. It is about voluntary entry. Whether you need a dog prepared for a flight or just want them to have a safe space at home, we work on building that positive association.

Training for the Family

I often involve the whole family, including children, to ensure everyone understands how to use the crate safely. It is a tool for the dog's well-being, not a storage solution for when you are busy. If you are struggling with a dog that panics at the sight of a crate, let's reset the foundation together.
