About Devotion & Rituals
I don't use studio lights or ask for staged smiles during rituals. When I document an event like Chhath or Holi, I move quietly, using only the available light of the diyas or the early morning sun. This approach keeps the atmosphere sacred and the expressions honest, ensuring the photos show the true human emotion of the moment.
My work in this cluster is about documentary photography in its purest form. Whether it is the intense gaze of a devotee during Chhath Mahaparv in Bihar or the joyful chaos of Masaan Holi in Varanasi, the goal is always the same: capture the soul of the place, not just the event.
The Documentary Approach
There is a lot of noise during festivals. My job is to find the silence within that. I work with prime lenses to keep a natural perspective, avoiding heavy gear that interrupts the flow of a ritual. You won't see me setting up flash stands or directing crowds. I prefer to be a witness, waiting for that one fleeting glance—the 'humanism' in a single frame.
Why Natural Light Matters
Most rituals happen at dawn or dusk, or under the glow of a fire. I believe these environments tell their own story. By working with natural light and high-contrast, moody editing, I bring out the textures of the skin, the grit of the ground, and the spiritual energy of the scene. I often mix color and black-and-white images to shift the focus from the vibrancy of the surroundings to the depth of the emotion.
Where I Shoot
My lens travels across India. I document the major cultural festivals, from the ghats of the Ganges to the temples of the south. If you are looking for an honest photo essay on a specific tradition or a 'day in the life' feature, I bring the same observant, wanderer's eye to your project. It is all 'sab moh maya hai' (an illusion), but I am here to capture the truth within it.
