The secret to this functional art is the layering. We do not just stick lights onto the wall. We build the sculpture around the circuitry, carving the clay or epoxy right up to the light source. This means the glow feels natural, like it is radiating from the stone or the petals of a flower, rather than sitting on top of the surface.
How We Make Art Functional
When we talk about functional art, we mean pieces that change the room’s atmosphere through light and touch. Whether it is a foyer mirror framed in rough, rock-like textures or a staircase wall where blossoms double as night lights, we treat these pieces as an interactive part of your home.
The Process
For outdoor fountain walls, we use heavy-duty, waterproof clay blends and wire mesh reinforcement to ensure the texture holds up against moisture and weather. The lighting is weather-proofed and integrated deep into the structure during the sculpting phase, so you get the visual depth of natural rock with the ambient benefit of soft, warm light.
For interior walls, it is all about the interplay of shadow and light. We carefully calculate the depth of the relief—anywhere from 0.5 inches to 4 inches—so that when the LED strips (hidden inside the structure) are switched on, the light hits the sculpture to create dramatic shadows.
