My Cricket Philosophy: Discipline and Test Match Standards
Cricket is about character, Test-match discipline, and the fitness to endure. This is how I build true cricketers.
A news article covering my views on player workload management. I have always maintained that for a fast bowler like Jasprit Bumrah, skipping the IPL to stay fresh for a Test series is crucial.
An interview with the Marathi newspaper Saamana where I stated, "Bumrala sangital asata, IPL khelu nakos" (I would have told Bumrah not to play the IPL). Player fitness for international tours is non-negotiable.
A detailed excerpt from my interview. I explained that being fully fit for an England tour is very important, and I would have convinced a player like Bumrah to rest instead of playing in the IPL before such a crucial series.
A Times of India article about a conversation with Farokh Engineer. We often reminisce about the old days and discuss the importance of nurturing young talent with the right values.
About My Cricket Philosophy
If you want to play for the country, you must prioritize fitness over the T20 circuit. I often tell my boys that skipping a league game to rest before a Test series is not a loss, it is a professional choice. My philosophy is built on 'vijigishu vrutti' (fighting spirit) — if you are not fully fit for a five-day game, you are not ready for the international stage.
Modern cricket is cluttered with T20 leagues, but the real test of a cricketer remains the five-day format. When I train players at my academy in Pune and Mumbai, we do not focus on short-term results. We look at the long game. This means managing your workload, knowing when to rest, and understanding that technique is only half the battle.
The other half is mental toughness. We run rigorous drills that push players to their limits. Whether it is a 9-year-old facing senior bowlers or a teenager preparing for a UK tour, the training is consistent. We incorporate power yoga, fitness conditioning, and deep-dive strategy sessions. When I talk to my students about my playing days at Lord's or the '83 World Cup, I am not just telling stories. I am showing them that success comes from discipline.
I personally guide students on when to play and when to practice. If you are serious about your cricket career, you need to understand that talent needs guidance. My academy provides the infrastructure, including floodlights, indoor nets, and grass wickets, but the student must provide the 'vijigishu vrutti'. Whether you are aiming for the U12, U16, or the senior level, my approach remains the same: step uthao jara, speed badhao abhi (lift your steps, increase your speed).
