Landmark Public Projects and Institutional Renovation
Renovating landmark institutions requires a delicate balance of preserving historical legacy while upgrading for modern administrative needs.
It is a profound honor to be entrusted with projects of national importance. Here, I am with the Hon. Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Devendra Fadnavis, discussing the renovation of Vidhan Bhavan. This work is a privilege, allowing me to blend modern design with the deep-rooted history of our state's most significant landmarks.
A moment captured with the honorable leadership of Maharashtra during the Vidhan Bhavan renovation project. Working on a landmark of governance requires immense trust and collaboration. I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the legacy of this iconic structure.
With Hon. Speaker Rahul Narwekar, whose guidance has been invaluable during the Vidhan Bhavan renovation. Designing for public office is about creating spaces that are functional, dignified, and reflective of the institution's importance. It is a responsibility I hold with great respect.
About Landmark Public Projects
When working on historic government buildings like Vidhan Bhavan, the primary challenge is integrating contemporary technology and comfort without altering the architectural character. We focus on enhancing spatial flow and ergonomic utility in chambers and offices while respecting the original materials and structural integrity that define these heritage spaces.
Restoring Legacy, Designing for the Future
Public projects are inherently different from any other design task. They carry a weight of history and represent the public trust. My approach to these spaces, such as the renovation of Vidhan Bhavan, is rooted in quiet observation. Before a single sketch is made, I spend time understanding the rhythm of the building, its original architectural intent, and how the people who inhabit it move through their day.
The Process of Respectful Intervention
Working with heritage architecture demands patience. It is rarely about starting from scratch. Instead, it is about identifying what must be preserved to maintain the soul of the structure. We look at the original masonry, the natural light pathways, and the existing spatial hierarchies. The goal is to introduce modern comforts—like better acoustics, concealed technological infrastructure, and intuitive layout planning—without the user ever feeling the transition between the past and the present.
Why Context Matters
Every project is an opportunity to tell a new story within an old framework. In government offices, functionality is paramount, but it does not have to be clinical. By selecting textures and materials that align with the site's history, we create environments that feel grounded and dignified. This design process requires frequent coordination with stakeholders to ensure that while the aesthetics evolve, the core identity of the institution remains untouched.
Darshini
I am Darshini, and for me, designing spaces is about listening to the building's history before adding a new chapter. Whether it is a state institution or a private office, I strive to keep the soul of the place alive while ensuring it meets the demands of modern life.
