Dance is more than technique, it is a dialogue between teacher and student. Here, learning follows the traditional path of guidance, trust, and shared life experiences.

The guru-shishya relationship can cross the boundaries of dance forms. It was a pleasure to mentor the talented Kathak artist Prachee Shah Paandya, crafting a piece with her.

A warm moment with Prachee. The love for the craft and the willingness to learn are what make the teaching journey so rewarding, regardless of the specific style.

Being part of my students' family milestones is a true pleasure. Here, I am participating in the upanayanam, or thread ceremony, of my shishya Megha's two sons.

Sharing a moment with my student's family during the ceremony. The guru-shishya bond extends to the entire family, creating a beautiful community.

With my dear shishya Megha and her husband Mayank. It is a joy to see my students grow not just as artists but also in their personal lives.

A happy group photo at the upanayanam ceremony. These moments of celebration and togetherness strengthen the bonds of our Natya Vriksha family.

With the children of my disciples. Being a guru means being a part of their lives, sharing in their joys and watching their families grow.

A Mother's Day feature in the Navbharat Times with my daughter and disciple, Sharanya. The guru-shishya relationship between a mother and daughter is a special and unique journey.

Paying tribute to Kamalini Dutt, a dear friend and a legend who revolutionized how dance was recorded for television. Here, I am honoring her with the Natya Vriksha Lifetime Achievement Award in 2023.

A moment of respect as I honor Kamalini Dutt. Our tradition teaches us to revere the gurus and stalwarts who have paved the way for us.

About Guru-Shishya Parampara: The Bond of Mentorship

At Natya Vriksha, I view my role not just as a teacher, but as your Akka, an elder sister navigating your dance journey alongside you. This is not a transactional arrangement where you leave the studio and the connection ends. My students become part of my extended family, and we celebrate life’s milestones together, from upanayanam ceremonies to personal triumphs, ensuring the art form stays deeply connected to our daily lives.
