Solid Wood and Steel Staircase Projects

A look at the structural details and materials in my recent staircase projects, where steelwork meets solid timber.

This centre-spine staircase creates a floating effect, using a single steel support and solid oak treads. The design keeps the hallway bright and open.

A bespoke spiral staircase connecting a living area to a mezzanine. It serves as a functional sculpture and a central feature of this beautiful open-plan home.

This shows the full journey of a spiral staircase, from fabricating the steel components in my workshop to the final installation. You can see the process from start to finish.

My workshop during the fabrication of a steel centre spine. Every part is measured, cut, and welded by me to ensure a perfect fit on site.

About this collection

Every staircase I build starts with the materials. Notice the walnut inlay strip on the oak treads in these projects. It is not just there for looks. That inlay provides a vital bit of grip and contrast against the oak grain, helping you find your footing while adding a distinct character to the stairs.

When I fabricate a staircase, I do not use off-the-shelf kits. I start with raw steel and timber in my workshop in Clonroche, Co. Wexford. The structural integrity comes from the steelwork, whether it is the heavy-duty central pole of a spiral design or the box-section spine of a floating staircase.

For the treads, I use solid American White Oak. It is dense, durable, and holds up well under daily traffic. I apply multiple coats of industrial-grade polyurethane lacquer to protect the wood from wear without hiding the grain. If you are considering a floating, centre-spine design, we will use toughened glass balustrades to keep the sightlines open, ensuring the hall remains bright.

For spiral designs, I curve the steel spindles to match the radius perfectly. The fabrication happens in-house, which means I can adjust the measurements to fit your specific floor-to-ceiling height. Whether you need a space-saving spiral for a mezzanine or a floating staircase as a central feature, the goal is to build a structure that is both rigid and visually integrated into your home.

I am the one behind the workshop door, fabricating every steel frame and sanding every tread myself. My focus is on making staircases that actually work for your space rather than sticking to standard catalogue templates.
